EXANDRIA UNLIMITED: CALAMITY - EP 2 PT 4

Comments

Definitely recommend Downfall as well. I think it’s a little easier to follow over all (clear goal) and, again, amazing role play. Ashley, Laura, and Tal from the OG cast are at the table, with some new AMAZING players, too.

To give a bit more explanation, the Lord of the Hells is essentially saying, when the gods came to Exandria, many gods decided they would devote their existence to certain principles - truth, love, honor, etc. In D&D, gods are usually associated with a domain, so there can be a god (or multiple gods) of light, life, death, trickery, and so on. When it came the Lord of the Hells’ turn to speak, he wanted to expand on the others’ creations. So he decided to become the god of lies and deception and hate, in that sort of “we can’t appreciate truth if the world doesn’t have lies, and we can’t appreciate love if the world doesn’t have hate” kind of way. But, what the Lord of Hells is saying is, the mortals of the world didn’t see those things as gifts. Mortals proclaimed them as evil, and decided they didn’t want to worship him, and the other gods of the “good” domains sided with mortals against the “evil” gods.

Brennan’s brilliance in playing a devil known as the Lord of lies is that he just told the truth and called our Zerxes friends. After all, here’s a brief summary of what we’ve already seen: Laerryn - running a side experiment in secret Nydas - questionable financial dealings and missing money, also mixed up in some backdoor ether dealing (a magister asked for a cut in episode 1) Patia - makes people have bad memories (Nydas assistant said to the porter they used could be added to patias list of people with bad memories) Loquatius - missing file on Evandrin, messing with local elections

The second half of episode 2 is so good, Brennan is too good at playing The Father of Lies

This part is so gooooood!! If the ads are getting you down I can totally recommend a free ad blocker, it doesn't get them all but it takes care of most! :)

Less Dungeons More Dragons

This helps SO much thank you

Oh I did also want to provide some lore since the stuff about the deities gets a little hard to follow. This is kind of a long read so sorry in advance: The gods of Exandria used to live Somewhere Else but then left that place and came to Exandria for Reasons (not really explored until Campaign 3) When they got here, they found the Primordials, which were the ancient and incredibly powerful elementals that already inhabited Exandria. These two groups lived peacefully for a while, during which the gods created mortal creatures including humans. They granted humans good things like happiness. Asmodeus, aka The Lord of the Hells created their opposites, hoping to make those earlier gifts even more meaningful. But the mortals hated him for it, and the other gods encouraged them to hate him. Some time later, some of the gods decided to grant mortals the power to use magic. The Primordials opposed this, and it caused the gods to split into two groups. The "Prime Deities" are the ones who wanted to give magic to people (think the Everlight, Pike's goddess in Vox) while the "Betrayer Gods" sided with the Primordials to destroy the mortals. Long story short, the mortals and prime deities won, and imprisoned the Primordials and Betrayers in various planes. Over time, the plane containing Asmodeus was transformed into the Nine Hells. This is presumably where he remains now, and where he is speaking to Zerxus from. He has not set foot physically on Exandria since his imprisonment.

This section is what really solidified the whole vibe of the series for me. It's a bunch of people who've spent years being among the most important people in the room and have let that convince them that they know better in every situation. Zerxus is looking at the literal capital-D Devil and his only thought is "I can fix him." He's so convinced of his own moral rightness that he believes there is no being he can't redeem. Meanwhile Patia and Laerryn are over here like "RIP to everyone killed by the gods for their hubris but I'm different." It's all just ambition and overconfidence, they've gotten so used to being able to achieve anything they want.

Time for peak 🥳 love working from home mondays so I can have this up while typing Parks and Recs ass emails back to the public about their neighbor disputes 😂
