CALAMITY EP 1 - CHARACTER 5

Comments

Traditionally in D&D the classical bird race is called the Aarakocra (you see one in the D&D movie that came out a bit ago). There is also the Kenku (we saw these briefly in the Might Nein, there was a little family of them wanting to get in to the carnival) they are mimics. Beyond that D&D also has the Owlin which is an owl race. And going back to early D&D there was the majestic Kyrie in the Dragonlance setting. They were similar to the Aarakocra but with a more human like appearance than the more birdlike Aarakocra. Ultimately I think thats why the Kyrie have never made a return in more recent editions of D&D, cause they were really very similar to the Aarakocra. Kenku imo are one of the most fun races to play because of the restrictions on how they communicate.

There are two other classes worth mentioning. One, the Artificer is an official class now, though as yet no one in any CR campaign has played one (that I can recall). Artificers were mentioned in the intro here for Calamity so they are a part of the world, just a relatively new class so not played as much. The other class is not an official class but is a class that Matt created called the Blood Hunter. Blood Hunters do show up in a later campaign and in the Mighty Nein. They are based in part on The Witcher, being a mixture of martial prowess and blood magic. Some using mutagens, some being lycanthopic. Very dynamic class. There will be a another official class added soon to bring the total to 14. The Mystic. But its in testing right now. Probably later this year?

Oh man Cerrit is great. Keep an eye on Travis as you watch cause he is always a fan of his fellow players and does NOT have a poker face. There are ~12 standard D&D classes in the current (5.5) edition. Below is a quick run down with Crit Role Characters you've seen/will seen next. - Barbarian - No Magic - Unarmored "angry" warriors (Grog, Yasha) - Bard - Magic - Magical musicians, high Charisma (Loquatius, Nydas, Scanlan) - Cleric - Magic - Conduits for divine power (Pike, Jester) - Druid - Magic - Harnesses the magic of Nature, shapechangers (Keyleth) - Fighter - No Magic - Skilled martial combatant and weapon user (Percy sort-of) - Monk - No Magic - Skilled and vaguely supernatural martial artist (Beau) - Paladin - Some Magic - Oath-bound warriors devoted to a purpose (Zerxus) - Ranger - Some Magic - Warrior of the wilds with a bit of magic (Vex'ahlia) - Rogue - No Magic - Skilled sneaky fighters (Vax'ildan, Cerrit) - Sorcerer - Magic - Innate magic wielders, born with it (Nydus, Gilmore) - Warlock - Magic - Sealed a pact with something for magic (Loquatius, Fjord) - Wizard - Magic - Learned magic from books and teachers (Laerryn, Patia, Caleb, Essek) Also each non-magic classes has exceptions where they can get magic. This is through sub-classes which is more detail then you'd want unless you start playing. Suffice to say each class has ways for everyone to feel unique from one another within the same classes.

Love Travis. One of the few CEO's out there I trust to do the right thing.

Hey Kayla! Just a heads up, and something to help you out when watching DND moving forward (apologies if someone else has explained this already), it isn't *always* about the higher number (but rolling high is generally good!) The DM will set something called a DC (Difficulty Class/Check). It's basically the minimum threshold that a character needs to hit on their roll for a "success" when it comes to things like Skill Checks(Investigation, Arcana, etc). Players will roll a 20 sided dice, and then add their bonuses to that roll to get the final number (hence why people can get numbers greater than 20). So Travis' character may have like, +10 to Investigation, so its whatever his roll is +10 as an example. Sometimes, the DM will give additional information based on how well someone rolls, but that is more up to the individual DM than the rules. Brennan likes to reward good rolls, so he tends to often give a little extra details/success. The DC isn't always a high number. Sometimes you can roll a 10 and still beat the DC just depending on what the DM has decided. Sometimes the DM will tell you the DC, but most often this is kept a secret from the players by the DM. Hopefully this helps when understanding some of the numbers given!

You nailed it, Rogues are not a magic using class, with one exception: the Arcane Trickster subclass. (All classes have further specializations called subclasses). Nott the Brave is one example of an Arcane Trickster. Mechanically on paper, they get a little bit of spellcasting. Narratively for Nott, Caleb taught him some low level spells such as Message, which is how he talks to Caleb thru a reed. In general Rogues are known for being extremely skilled. Traditionally the highlight skill is stealth, so they can sneak around. The game mechanics allow a player to pick other skills to be good at. In Travis/Cerrits case, the skills are investigation and perception which make him a great detective of sorts

God I love Cerrit. Just a full on Humphrey Bogart film noir detective who also happens to be a bird person and who also happens to be surrounded by wizards on a floating city. Yet another in the long and illustrious history of regular-ass dude characters in stories about godlike wizards

It's been a blast getting to re-watch this with you! Every character in this campaign is phenomenal, and Brennan's storytelling truly is a work of art. One of my favorite things about D&D is its just as much fun to watch people play it as it is to play yourself. ⚔️

Kevin C

Yes, I was waiting for him, Cerrit is arguably one my favourite CritRole characters, and probably my favourite character that Travis has played. To answer the question if Rogues can use magic, every major class has different subclasses, some will allow Rogues to use limited amounts of magic, like mage hand for example, which Nott The Brave uses in some instances. Cerrits subclass is what’s called an inquisitive Rogue, he does not have the ability to use magic, instead his ability lies in focusing onfiguring out secrets and unraveling mysteries, so yes, he’s essentially a detective. His race is called Eisfuura :) so happy to see you watch this, it’s gonna be really good.
