Ashita no Joe Episode 1 Early Access - Fighting Chance

oh my god

I've been waiting for years for a new Ashita no Joe series reaction, and I've finally been blessed for my patience :'). And then I get double blessed because Tee is doing it - your pre and post episode discussion was just fascinating, especially as you go frame-by-frame. There's things that you pointed out that I never considered before, like the 'curve' of the action shots, which - Yeah!! The pacing of each individual punch is just so fundamentally different from what you see today. My personal history with ANJ, and this episode in particular, is kind of funny. I was doing a mini challenge for myself (that I still need to finish, oops) where I'd watch an anime for every year since the first anime (with some leeway on the early years no anime was released) in 1917, seeing how the medium evolved. ANJ was my pick for 1970. My thoughts on everything I watched before Joe ranged from "oh, that was actually kinda good!" to "this was probably good in its time but I dislike it now" to "oh. that's nationalist propaganda". I went into Joe thinking that I'd probably feel the same way; being pleasantly surprised that it was good. Holy SHIT was I wrong. Just saying I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement, I was absolutely floored by what I was watching. From the moment I saw Joe whistling the theme song as he drifts through the rundown town, the rough, gritty animation, the intrigue and mystery surrounding Joe himself, I was hooked. And the episode just kept on delivering that same quality, over and over. Sometimes, when I experience a piece of media for the first time, I can tell it's going to be a hyperfixation for me. There are few times that I've felt this way, but the first episode of ANJ is, without a doubt, one of them. It's a series that means so much to me and I can't wait to relive it all over again. One last thing: shout-out to Joe's laugh. YAHAHAHA
