Paripi Koumei Ya Boy Kongming! Episode 1 Early Access

Comments

Was just rewatching Romance of the Three Kingdoms for the nth time when I saw you're watching this, very hyped. Some background trivia: - Kongming was like a Da Vinci of his time. He was not just a military genius, he was also good at politics, astronomy, medicine, music, literature etc. He invented stuff like the manju, repeating crossbow, landmine. During his school days he was known amongst his peers of creating "weird" music. - There's a little Easter egg at the end of this episode. Eiko showed that she had 208 instagram followers. Kongming pledged loyalty to Liu Bei in 208 AD. Eiko sang 3 times to Kongming, Liu Bei visited Kongming's home 3 times to recruit him. Eiko started out as a bartender with nothing, Liu Bei started out as a straw shoe salesman, and eventually became emperor or Shu with Kongming's help.

The reason people can recognize Kongming, is because Japan regards Romance of the Three Kingdoms the same way the West would regard Shakespeare or Arthurian Legend; they teach it in schools from a young age, there is plenty of adaptations in media and, though you might not have an encyclopedic knowledge of it, you can at least recognize the characters. You can also understand Owner-san's reaction because of this, he's basically a Shakespeare nerd, with no one who has his interests in common, coming face to face with a MacBeth LARPer who refuses to break character.

I could not be more hype. The first episode of Kongming remains quite possibly the strongest introduction to a series that I have ever seen. Start with a ridiculous premise, ridiculous comedy, ridiculous characters so unassailably lovable that you're already rooting for them before they say a single word, and then throw in an emotional heart so potent that you completely forget how ridiculous it all is and get absolutely, wholly invested in every bit of the story within a single twenty-one minute episode. God I hope a second season happens someday.

Yeah, from my perspective, Ya Boy Kongming was just another half baked idol anime that I didn't even bother to watch. The premise seemed too weird. The visual images in the marketing weren't compelling. And it was stuck on HiDive which doesn't get as many good shows and as many viewers. But then something happened that reverberated through the anime community and got everyone to give the show a chance... and the first episode blew us all away. You mention Symphogear, and sure it has the passing it on from Kanade to Hibiki thing happening a bit... but I think it relates more to Carole & Tuesday. At one point C&T are on the couches in their apartment talking about what got them into music, and Carole mentions that it was hearing Flora in the refuge camp back on Earth that touched her and turned her life around. Big parallels there. Either way, I love good music anime. Symphogear, Carole & Tuesday, Revue Starlight, Bocchi The Rock, Sound! Euphonium, Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song-, and Macross (more the franchise, though SDF Macross gets there eventually, too...) all share this idea that music can bring us together and change the world. And... anime, with every frame and every note having to be crafted from nothing, expresses that power of music so so well! I'm really glad this show won. It's beautiful and funny but also has its serious and touching moments, too. And a surprising amount of good music. Symphogear, Carole & Tuesday, and Macross Frontier have the biggest libraries of unique voiced songs. This thing isn't quite at that ridiculous level... but it has a solid handful similar to Bocchi the Rock. Had a blast watching. Can't wait for next week!
