2. Genya and Sutra. On the last reaction video comment, I had explained what Genya chants are 'Amitabha Sutra'. The following is a part of the sutra recited by Genya. 舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園 與大比丘僧千二百五十人俱 At the Jetavana-vihāra of Śrāvastī, There were gathering of great Bhikshus, twelvehundredfifty in all. 皆是大阿羅漢 衆所知識長老舍利弗 They are the Great Arhats, the Elder Śāriputra known to all. The 佛說阿彌陀經(Bussetsuamidakyou). Scriptures says by having faith in Amita, as All Buddhas will protect and care for you, you will be reborn in the world of Buddha Amitābha, in the 極樂淨土(sukhāvatī in Sanskrit). In this, 舍衛國Śrāvastī is the capital of Kosala State, ancient India. 祇園精舎Jetavana-vihāra is the place where Shakyamuni Buddha, the Siddhartha himslef gave his sermon, This temple was built by a man named 須達多(Sudatta), who was famous for taking pity on and taking care of "child who lost their parents" and childless old people. So already seems quite fit to Genya, who dies and comes back to life by reciting sutras, lost his mom. There is one more thing worth mentioning here. Its the most widely read version written by the monk 鳩摩羅什Kumarajiva, and there is a bird appearing in the sutra, closely related to the main subject. 共命之鳥. birds with the same fate. This bird got two heads on one body, and in order to protect each other, they promise that one stays vigil while other one sleeping. but oneday one head secretly ate the delicious fruit, the other head became angry and ate the poison fruit, resulting in both deaths. So 共命之鳥 means a soulmate share fate, when one dies, the other should die as well. yet the bird arguing over trivial things and never being able to reconcile. The older brother Sanemi Shinazugawa, and the younger brother Genya, promised to protect their families together and stayed awake at night. That night Sanemi goes out to find her mother, eventually turns out lose all their family. And Genya still carry the fact that Genya who could not do his part blames Sanemi as heavy luggage . Here the two heads of a bird represent Shinazugawa brothers, and according to the original story, there is no hope for this bird, it eventually dies without being able to reconcile. But the monk Kumarajiva mentioned this bird in the Amitabha Sutra, and in the 極樂淨土 the 共命之鳥 are singing, said these birds do not have any sinful karma. This is the part that Kumarajiva emphasize the point of the Amitabha Sutra, like "Sariputra, the paradise you can go to with faith is a place where even these cursed birds can chirp and sing with peace." So reciting this sutra repeatedly was cause it is about how he advance with his brother to the world he aspires so. Now all the metaphorical contrasts between Genya and Hantengu are over. Only the confrontation between Hantengu and Tanjiro remains. Explaining these things in English was a real challenge for me. I hope the sentence isn't too awkward.

1. Hantegu Hantengu's four alter egos were called 喜怒哀樂Kidoairaku, which originally is a word that represents various emotional states of humans, with 4 Kanji respresenting 喜happiness, 怒anger, 哀sadness, 樂pleasure. However there is more deep meaning, since 喜怒哀樂Kidoairaku(onis) each got a actual name which author intentionally set as distorted, twisted meaning. Knowing the meaning of their names is first key to understand Hantengu's temperament and the thesis of entire show. The one who keep fronting Genya, Aizetsu(哀絶);哀(sorrow, sorry, sympathy) and 絶(cut off, sever), can roughly translated as extreme pity, sadness. In fact during a fight, whenever Aizetsu hurts Nezuko or Genya, he mention feel sorrow for him. So motif to metaphor; first, 哀(sorrow, sorry, sympathy) is the emotion that the closest to Buddhist ideology among Kidoairaku. and second, The '哀絶' that Aizetsu signify is why he got the role in thiese episodes, represents of a tengu's attribute as proselyte (embarassed himself after facing Budda or monk and fear them) I expained earlier. That is, the whole scene in which Aizetsu, a tengu symbolize such eidos, been scared and even beheaded by Genya who represents Buddhism, reflects the relationship between tengu and Buddhism in the narrative, I have explained so far. On the other hand, Anger is the most at odds with Buddhism among Kidoairaku. 積怒Sekido can interpreted as 'long time accumulated/stacked rage'. So this Sekido, absorbs other emotions and becomes 憎Hatred/Zohakuten, which expresses the process of depravity that a person's anger accumulates and devours other emotions, and pure hatred sprouts. And most importantly, during this process, Urogi and Karaku were just easily merged into Sekido, Aizetsu is the only one who try to refuse and protest, is clearly revealing its symbolism. So It is said that from a Buddhist point of view, the heart of sympathy is the most and sole one surpress the cause of evil, and Aizetsu symbolizes a last remain feeble human-like heart that the only one try holding back Hantengu's evildoing. Here, the show's most overall theme is now clarified; That Aizetsu(sympathy) is the most important thing that human beings should not forget until the end of the world. So by these piled up motives and contrasts, the zohakuten who swallowed even such Aizetsu, means the original sin that blatantly violate all kinds of Buddhist aesthetics, and then the grand religious zohakuten theme music there, to annouce the incarnation of the Anti-Buddhist, the 悪鬼羅刹 (Akkirasetsu). Zohakuten immediately accused Tanjiro and Genya as fiend, for persecuting himself (cowardice怯(main body)), woeful wick one, and the following questions and answers with Tanjiro leads to, "Those who feel sympathy only to themselves and not to others are forsooth sinners" It's shame that I couldn't explain with it from the first season of the anime, but in fact this scene is the highlight of Tanjiro and his journey which is all about buddism metapor in it. Tanjiro was asking for this answer in season 2, he asked Daki, “'Why can't someone understand the pain of others. Why you only care about self?”. But Daki and Kyutaro's epic declaration scene revealed that they only return, are evil but not the root of evil. After this scene, you can see directing that express Tanjiro's wrath quickly changes to a sense of calling and he sends Taki and Kyutaro with respect. So season3 is about Tanjiro got answer, finally facing the fundamental evil. All these narratives;Aizetsu Genya fight, Aizetsu afraid of Genya, but Sekido absorbs other emotions, becomes pure hatred... All of them is there for symbolizes the peccatum originale of cowards who transgress the providence. By borrowing Buddhist metaphor, It declaring how ugly and unforgivable existence of oni that harm others all just because their own lives are precious. Story not ended yet, so I will return with this topic after Hantengu's past revealed. By the way, 空喜urogi can be translated as 'vain joy', 'vile happiness'.
