Things I can say about OG Macross without spoiling anything: It has a very unique twist on a first-contact scenario that I've not seen any other show do the same way; The movie is way better paced than the series, but the series spends a lot of downtime with some interesting (and some very decidedly uninteresting) characters; and when the budget hits, it HITS. I think OG Macross at its best looks much better visually than OG Gundam, but they may have just had more funding. Also, the answer to "How do idols and mecha fit together at all?" is "Shockingly smoothly and astonishingly hype...ly." Also also, Macross F is by far the best (or at least highest fidelity and most accessible) Macross series, but there's a lot of background lore you need to watch the previous series to understand (or just watch the recap movies which are, as mentioned, much higher quality than the shows). The idol/mecha mix is also a lot less prominent in OG Macross. I think much of the series' reputation for idol/mecha hijinks comes from 7/F/Delta, while OG/Zero/Plus are much less... idol-y. There are still music-related plotlines in those ones, just not quite to the extent that the series' reputation would maybe lead you to believe.

I'm really excited you decided to follow up Zeta with both Macross and ZZ Gundam! I'm a huge fan of SDF Macross, it's a hugely important and influential show that explores some very interesting themes and has a lot more to dig into then you may initially expect - even with its flaws and oddities and, yes, also its bouts of silliness. Since you asked for comments about the production/creators/staff:
* Macross is known as the first anime whose main creators were people who had grown up watching anime and were anime fans themselves, marking a big generational shift in the industry. The character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto and mechanical designer Shoji Kawamori were in a high school anime fan club together, where they even produced Gundam fanzines. They joined the writings and designs-focused Studio Nue, which produced this show along with the classic studio Tatsunoko and Noboru Ishiguro's studio Artland. Mikimoto and Kawamori were actually still university students at the time this show was produced, which apparently caused chagrin among senior animators, who found themselves outranked by newbies who were already promoted to such important roles
* There are still plenty of veterans, however, as Studio Nue were veterans of the pioneer sci-fi anime Space Battleship Yamato, of which Noboru Ishiguro was the technical director. Two of Macross's main writers, Kenichi Matsuzaki and Hiroyuki Hoshiyama, were also the main writers of Gundam under Tomino
* Ichiro Itano is the main mechanical animator for this show. He animated all the mecha parts of the OP, and is the mechanical animation director for several episodes. He was fresh off working on the Gundam movie trilogy and on Tomino's other momentous anime series from the era, Space Runaway Ideon, the show where he first devised the Itano circus. If you see an amazing mechanical animation scene in this show, odds are it's Itano, and trust me, there are a lot of them. Make sure to remember to check sakugabooru!
* This was also the first professional anime work of Hideaki Anno, as a key animator, along with future fellow Gainax creators Hiroyuki Yamaga, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and Mahiro Maeda, due to recognition for their work on the epoch-making Daicon III opening animations. Anno's first key animation is in episode 2
* Major Focker is based off Lt. Sleggar Law from Gundam. Yes, THAT guy. Remember him??
* There's this great video from the channel MercuryFalcon on the history of Macross. I don't remember it having major spoilers, but you may still want to wait a few episodes before you watch it anyways: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poSfKrx-i9g
