Gundam Replacement Poll (Yeah, Again)

Please forgive me for experimenting. Let's try this a different way.

Without considering Gundam at all, please vote for which of these shows you would most like to see me watch and discuss.

I would love for you to finish Gundam until Char's Counterattack. CCA is basically the pinnacle of Gundam and the point where Tomino's idea of what Gundam really is fully matures, plus the most amazing animation in any of his previous works. However, the directing Ashita no Joe 2 is a complete masterpiece, from start to finish you will be in disbelief of what you are experiencing. Every single frame is like a painting. Finally, Karekano is an Anno classic. Like if you watch it, it would be like finding the missing link between the Evangelion and FLCL. It is that switch that made late Gainax into what it was, all thanks to the mad lad Anno himself.

Joe is a miracle series to this day, over 50 years old. If not now, it ought to be seen eventually. Ideon has ups and downs in its production, but is thoroughly unique in tone for its genre as is a Tomino show standard. Also culminates in one of the most satisfying animated movies I've ever seen.

Dopamine Cloud

I see (unsurprisingly although it makes me a bit sad) Ideon and Yamato (btw it's intended as the 70s series right?) being last and i imagine a little crying Anno watching this (yes there's one of his own series here, but we all know he'd still prefer one of his fanboy dream over any of his own lol) By the way Tee, since this seem to be the "old series block" (??) have you considered putting Versailles no Bara and possibly some Lupin the III (starting from part 1) in it?

Lorenzo Barducci

Macross being a mecha show on a different trajectory compared to Gundam, would be the perfect replacement in my opinion

a-TOMAS-phere

I vote for a "i want to watch x show so i will watch it" slot

Zipzip

I remember liking KareKano. I have no idea if it holds up.

Silver Bard Games

Not really invested in any of those so I will let those who are vote it out.

Elevown

Went with Ideon since I have yet to see anyone react to it. Another great suggestion would be Armored Trooper Votoms, imo probably the best "real robot" franchise out of the 80's.

Galatea

Voting KareKano.

Marta Kira Ayanami

Ashita no Joe would be incredible, became my all time favorite. And there are no reactions of it whatsoever.

Timo

I would consider it. After all the manga is garbage and the anime is great. The mangaka was mad because the anime was had more comedy But the manga had garbage shoujo drama and (maga sploiler)..... ........... Arima for no reason is a rap*st in the manga Just like any shojo-manga male protagonistd are garbage human beings and you are supposed to support them or feel bad for them

Fabian Alpuche

You're totally right, it shouldn't be framed as an anno original, wasn't my intent.

matthew bremmer

You got a hell of an assortment here, would greatly enjoy a reaction series for any of these! My pick is Joe bc it's my all time, tho I'd want to give a heads up that there's content overlap between Joe 1 and Joe 2. Still recommend watching Joe 1 all the way through, just be aware Joe 2 starts at an earlier part in the story and not DIRECTLY after ep79 of Joe 1. It seems Macross might take it tho which I think would be fitting to take Gundam's slot...although you're opening yourself up to another massive franchise haha

Caribou Coon

It's a manga adaptation fwiw, I wouldn't frame it as an Anno original

Caribou Coon

macross - solely for the delta season so i can see the reactions you have to the glorified idol promotion songs

LAMPOON MAN

The sequel too? If you only saw Megalo Box there's still hope in my heart for a Nomad reaction... someday.

CodeMonkeysGuy

Karekano was scripted and directed by Evangelion's Anno. That's enough for my vote. Word of warning towards the end the production quality goes ... pretty insane .. not in a good way at all.

matthew bremmer

Pity this isn't a ranked poll! I'm equal for Yamato or Macross.

David Pulver

Unfortunately... I've seen Megalo Box! Part of why I want to go see Joe. I know it's got all those roots and I felt like I was missing something watching it.

Teeaboo

It is not so much that the meaning is strange, but rather that it is uncomfortable because I remember it with Japanese sounds.

iHatePiano

The number one reason I would put in for Ashita no Joe here is to get Megalo Box + Nomad afterwards. It's one hell of a modern classic and all its own show even if it doesn't forget where it came from.

CodeMonkeysGuy

It should be something like Space Time Fortress Macross, right? (Mostly using translators)

Teeaboo

I never dreamed that "時空要塞マクロス" was translated as "Super Dimension Fortress Macross." As a Japanese, I find it a bit strange.

iHatePiano

Ideon as it's basically Eva before Eva

Angel Jaimes

Oh wow, would love for Karekano to win!

Volk

I have not seen any of these shows

LordFifth

Omg Karekano I think you would love it since you are liking Kaguya-sama And as something directed by Hideaki Anno it is something so different from the other things he has done
