Mushoku Tensei 16 + 17 Slightly Early Access

She was a healer, not a fighter. So she would have died like anyone without a weapon and fighting skills.

Jerid Glasspoole

I think the difference in the preception of time is also and interesting aspect, to a small child 6 years with family members is basically a lifetime, while to 40-something year old Rudy, they might as well be friendly roommates he dicked around with for a bit. It doesn't help that his unnatural inteligence and independence messed with the usual family hierarchy.

Fishgiver

The Sylphie thing was somewhat understandable though, after all Sylphie was his closest friend and a little child, while Zenith, even though she is his mother, was still an S-class adventurer. She should be able to survive what most people could not.

Talon

You're ignoring what I said. I said the issue was "it never crossed his mind", not that he never did anything about it. Whether he knew about the disaster or not is irrelevant. Even if he didn't know that anyone else was caught in the disaster, he knew that HE was. The THOUGHT should have at least crossed his mind to let his family know that he was safe. He's been on the road for a year and a half through multiple cities. He admits it himself, that until this last city the thought never even crossed his mind. Then when he is told what happened he still didn't think about his family at all, still thinking about Sylphie first. Throughout the show we've seen multiple times where Eris was worried about her family, or if she'd get to see them again. Not once do we see it out of Rudy, because he just doesn't care enough for it to be a priority. In his head they're still "Paul" and "Zenith". It's not till after this that he starts to treat them as family. I already said Paul was unreasonable, but I don't think Rudy was reasonable either. My issue is people see this situation as being too one sided.

Rudy was at the epicentre of the incident, he had no way of knowing the extend of it, and no reason whatsoever to assume that his family in Buena Village, that, just as a reminder, has sent him off to a different city for 5 years and forbidden him from even contacting them per letter until he is done with his job, was in any kind of danger. Furthermore, this is basically the first time Rudy even has a reasonable chance to contact his family, letters in the world of Mushoku Tensei take more or less just as long to travel as people do (since people have to carry them) and they get lost, especially in an unhabitable place like the Demon continent. Even if he decided to send a letter from the Demon Continent there was a good chance that the letter wouldn't arrive before he arrived and he would have sent the Letter to Bunea village, which is gone, so it definitely wouldn't have reached Paul before Rudy arrived in Millis. Sending a letter from Zant port might have had a reasonable chance but there he was kidnapped by Gyes on the day of his arrival. This is the first time Rudy is in human territory with more or less good infrastructure and the first thing he decides to do is write a letter to try to contact them. Sure, Rudy could have done some things better, but his faults are pretty reasonable ones if you only have the information Rudy had. It's understandable for Paul, in his desperate situation and drunk, to be mad at him in a knee jerk reaction. Nevertheless, at its core, him expecting Rudy to just magically know what happened and solve the situation, and then lashing out at him for not fulfilling those ridiculous expectations, instead of being happy that his son made it back alive with his body intact, is just wrong on a basic level, especially as a parent towards your child.

These 2 episodes never fail to make me cry, great choice to do both right away.

My biggest issue with Rudy in all this was the very fact that "it never crossed his mind". It never crossed his mind because he didn't care enough. Which is understandable from our viewer perspective since we know he's from another world and at the time was still treating all of this like a game, but to Paul I can see how that would be devastating. Your son doesn't care enough to worry about his family, and assuming Rudy didn't know they were in danger, he still didn't care enough to even think about letting them know that at least he was safe. Even when he gets told, his first thoughts go to Sylphie and not his mom and baby sister. They're both wrong in how they handled the situation but I feel like people are far too hard on Paul and way too forgiving to Rudy.
