Another thing about that cut of Eugene looking out the window, and Shin looking into the shadow that just came to me, thanks to Tee’s pointing it out, is that the two of them make a Janus. Eugene is looking out, to the future, while Shin is still trapped in the shadows of his past. Eugene also is an interesting friend for the Reaper. He, like the Priest that saved him and like Lena the one he entrusted his emotions and like the people that took everything from him, is an Alba. Like Rei, he’s a doting elder brother. So Eugene is the distillation of a lot of people in Shin’s life. His past. Dreams and dreamscapes are gaining more and more importance, narratively. So the nightmare is a great look into Shin’s mental state. And center focus in the dream is the one Shin couldn’t save: Kaie. That hurt.
