The animation team chose to adapt it chronologically when the light novel is anachronic. Unfortunately for the viewer, they opted to leave one very important scene out of the light novel. You'll know it when you get to it. Ask us for an explanation.

On my other hand, this is sort of a reminder that--however much of a badass Lena has become, she's still a teenager in love and rationality at sixteen for anybody is a moment to moment proposition. Dear Haruhi, I remember being sixteen. I get it.
