The Special Recon Mission is basically to keep going into Legion territory and never come back, which is also their last mission. That's why Shin said "we are finally free" - indeed, after they set out they won't have to obey any orders anymore, they can go, fight, or hide somewhere until starving, anything except returning, the Republic won't care.
