this series always felt so impactful for me because you rarely see such explicit main plots surrounding anxiety in general settings. This entire narrative focusing on that aspect of detachment and isolation to the world people and family around you, from anxiety, to difficulty interpreting the emotions of others (adhd/autistic feeling or leaning almost I definitely see in Shoya as someone with those issues myself ) , from different social situations, or from disability, and how that divide is not nearly the pleasant thing adults will always advertise it as to us as kids. teachers saying "your differences make you special!" as if tying to pass off acknowledging the difficulties you experience from that divide to your peers. My biggest issue with this film was that it didn't take the time to tell those different experiences. Literally. When I say this is a favorite series I'm fully referring to the manga itself since the most obvious issue with this film was its pacing. It felt clunky, stitched together, way too long overall but too short in the moments that mattered and with disregard to individual characters instead just focusing on their general addition to the overall plot. Its an absolutely beautiful film. Visually. I just think this being an adaptation from a full 7 volume manga that it could have done way way better as a short anime series, no matter the visual budget cuts in animation.

haha, I'm just a weird one. If I think about it, I write a bit like a text book, and I probably try to stay informal to lighten my tone.

Why do you keep saying show instead of film? Genuine question not being snarky :p

Thanks for the watch, Tee. I know you don't always jive with shows that have a negative takeaway (themes and examples showing how not to solve a problem), and appreciate going out of your way to overcome that bias in your analysis. I'm the opposite, and recognize that negative outlook of myself reflected in these characters. I agree completely with you that the show is too long and needs cutting. Pacing is one of the strong points of Kimi No Na Wa (inevitable comparison). I actually really jived with the ending. I see Shoya as the main character and focus of the story, and his being able to acknowledge the world around him as its finale. Shoko's shame is secondary to his, and enables him to find solace through comradery. Though I do think her struggle is more explecite then his (and just as important, thematically). As someone who doesn't have self confidence, but plenty of shame (for no reason/just a natural obstacle), I can't count the number of times I've been told to look people in the face. So seeing someone able to accomplish something I deeply wish to, cuts me deep. I still give this show an 8, but I find myself more emotionally resonate with the characters as time goes on

This was a pleasant surprise
