2021-08-12 05:45:12 +0000 UTCThis episode is such a change of pace. It really caught me off guard when it aired. I remember seeing a lot of people take issue with the fact that Tanaka's phone breaking would probably not result in you losing your pull in a gatcha since it is server-side. Which struck me as one of the wildest cases of missing the forest for the trees in my recent memory. Especially since the episode itself sort of revolves around a series of "acts of god", Tanaka even lampshades it when he finds the gun without even knowing that Odokawa has the Donraku eraser. There is an interplay between the constant that is Tanaka's addictive personality and this series of events that are set up in the perfect way to make him screw himself over again and again. He gets swindled online, finds out that the guy who sold the eraser is on top of the leaderboard, gets the dodo, loses the dodo, his bird dies, he finds the gun, and even though he doesn't know it yet Odokawa has the eraser. It kind of reminds me of the Joker "All it takes is one bad day" thing from The Killing Joke. Especially since, like in that story, all of this stuff is almost cosmically unfortunate but ultimately only makes him lose his mind due to his own flaws. It is tragic in the classical sense because it didn't have to go this way. Someone else might have been fine. But unfortunately, Tanaka is Tanaka.
