I also found Neiru's comment about her lack of parents interesting, and it certainly made me think about the role the nuclear family has on young girls. The show's probably not going to delve into it, but it does make you wonder if the lack of a mother and a father to strictly impose gender roles on Neiru has had some part of her feeling "not cut out for female society." If that's the case I think she got lucky :P.

I actually really liked how this show handled Rika's self-harm. When talking to people who have not only self-harmed (through cutting or through substance abuse), but who are also resistant to treatment to stop it and also self-harm throughout the entirety of their lives, you often hear them criticize 1) the most popular narrative around self-harm, which falsely blames self-harm as a "gateway" to suicide instead of blaming the material conditions which cause suffering 2) the notion that complete abstinence from these behaviors is better or possible for everyone, instead of advocating for a harm-reduction approach 3) the sort of punitive instinct people have towards those that self-harm, especially within psychiatry. The sad truth is, sometimes people need to do harmful things to themselves to survive, even if these things might not be ideal, because nothing else works for them. So I'm glad this episode acknowledged Rika might need to cut, at least at this point in her life, to at least continue living without passing judgement on her decision.

This episode is what solidified Rika as my favorite character in the series. The way her vulnerabilities, flaws, mannerisms and ways of dealing with everything is so meticulously well done it's staggering. Plus her realization moment and triumph over becoming like her mom is really powerful
