Here are the design notes covering my process creating the elf and devil girl so far! Along with Orby, these 3 girls were all created together at the same time, for several reasons:
1. I wanted to design them all simultaneously to make sure their colour schemes, hairstyles & personalities were all completely distinct from each other.
2. This core main cast of 3 is significantly smaller than previous games (Project WAND having around 5-6 love interests), so I wanted to make sure each girl covered a totally different appeal & had interesting dynamics with each other.
Also included are notes about these girls' basic backstories. Since this next game will be more geared to a larger audience, we want to put more thought into the actual story and crafting these characters with more meat for story and dialogue - after all, we don't have hardcore sex to fall back on so easily this time, lol.
Despite this though, I do want to continue emphasising that this game will still be plenty lewd, which I hopefully conveyed in all these drawings and images so far!
Elf is built using 3 primary ingredients, Ichigo, Hermione Granger and Diana Cavendish - all fitting the proper/responsible/smart archetype for her, combining parts of them I liked the most from each.
Of the 3, Elf is the responsible, smart one. She knows all about magic and lore, and is usually the one making sure the team follows the plan. (to compare with WAND, she's like a combination of Shin's smarts & sharp tongue with Xian's calm & responsible demeanour)
Devil is built using 3 primary ingredients: Zero Two, W and Eris. All these characters are used to build a character who fits a rebellious, bad girl archetype.
Of the 3, Devil is the best fighter. She's also the most experienced, and has more streetsmarts compared to Elf's booksmarts, often causing them to butt heads. (to compare with WAND, she's like Kat from the first WAND game, flirtatious and cheeky, combined with Savaasa's tough & easygoing attitude)
I've also included at the end of the gallery some examples of the yuri dynamics each girl has with each other, to give you an idea of what sorts of interactions to expect from them. If you're a yuri connoisseur, some of these ships should be familiar to you.
This is intentional, as I wanted to tackle my own version of some more popular yuri ship dynamics in fiction, combining the parts I like from many different places into this game's story.
There may also be a 4th main girl I'm thinking of adding as another main love interest, but it's still early to say. I'll inform you all if I end up satisfied enough with her design to promote her to the main cast.
As an early heads-up, I also want to say that a "harem ending" is definitely possible for this game, i.e. romancing all the girls. You can choose to stay loyal to one girl all the way, but building a polycule is possible, if not encouraged. Not only will you be romancing them, they will also be caught up in steamy situations with each other - it's up to you whether to join in and grab a piece of the action too!
Why? Because as a fan of lots of anime, from romance to harem and action/shonen series, I've encountered lots of them where the harem or love interest is fully devoted to a boring, blank slate protag - leaving me frustrated. I would ask things like "why do these girls even like the protag?" and "this would be way more interesting if the harem just got with each other instead".
And one of my biggest pet peeves are love triangles - mainly because the love interest I like never wins in the end (lol), but also because, why CAN'T both of the love interests win, if it's written properly? Why should I hate or shun the other options just because I want one to win, when I can love all the options as much as I want?
And if we're just talking lewds, wouldn't it also just be hotter if not only could you get down with your love interests, but they got down with each other too? All at the same time?
These frustrations have directly led to my decisions with this main cast - not only do I want to make sure the protag, Orby, is a fun and interesting character by herself, I also didn't want to lock myself out of the different ways her love interests could interact with each other in fun and lewd ways.
If you're seeing the vision, then I hope you keep following our development with this! The future dev logs won't be as wordy hopefully, as I've gotten a lot of the big idea stuff on paper and out of the way. Until next update. - SYTO
