When it comes to the Quantum Mechanics (and other scientific) elements of the show, I don't speak up. There's probably many many people who are more well versed and can explain it better. But ... when it comes to literary form and philosophy, that's my jam. Plus, I feel like Rick and Morty is one of those shows that the more effort you put into it the more you get out of it. It's like if you wanna listen to Drake, go ahead, it's easy, it's all on the surface, no thought or research required. If your gonna listen to MF Doom, or Aesop Rock (I'll keep Kendrick out of this, not trying to start a war) or someone like that, yeh you can just casually listen, but unless you already know everything about everything, putting in a bit of research, looking up what words mean, what they're going on about in their lyrics, is going to make it more of an enjoyable experience, your going to understand more and appreciate more.

This is kind of my field of "expertise" so I've got to say a few things, but I'm going to try to not get into too much over the top detail, or too long a philosophical rant. A guy named Joseph Campbell looked at many classic examples of literature, and created a circular chart called The Hero's Journey. Essentially it's the format that hero narratives typically follow. I won't bore anyone with the details here, you can look it up if you'd like. Dan Harmon, the main writer of Rick and Morty, has his own variation. Google Dan Harmon's Story Circle if your interested. This episode is basically an off kilter exploration of the structure, without any real plot. There will be more of this type of structural examination in the future, and to a greater degree. Now, what is "Canon"? Historically this was a simple question to answer. Canon is the entirety of a body of work. When music or literature was written by one person, Mozart's Canon was all the musical works of Mozart. Shakespeare's Canon was all of Shakespeare's writings. Nowadays things are more complicated. You have multiple creators, writers, directors, artists, stars, studios, rights owners, etc. that work with the same character or universe over decades and decades. So "Canon" tends to mean Official, as in this actually occured in this universe or to this character. But what that actually means is up to debate. Who gets to decide what is official? You've got obvious examples of what isn't canon. A random person writing a fanfiction, that isn't licensed or official, isn't canon. However, the complication arises when you try to figure out what is canon. You've got numerous Batman movies, and tv shows, and comic books, where different things occur, characters are different, the time is different, and so on. So what might've been Canon in the official TV show of the 60's, isn't necessarily the same as what was in the official Christopher Nolan Movies more recently. Can two contradictory situations both be canon? Can Canon change over time? Or would that mean that Canon doesn't really exist, because if it can change, then does that mean that it wasn't actually officially true to begin with? So the easy answer to what is canon is something that is officially part of the body of work. What that actually means depends on who you ask.

Canon means it actually happened in the universe of the show or movie, etc.

TheEyez187

One of the best episodes, not least for the Krull homage [acid-guys goons! :D]

TheEyez187

Absolutely correct, but its canon. :D

TheEyez187

Not gonna lie, I feel like the writers kept a logbook of all their scrapped ideas and just mashed em together into one episode to confuse all of us, still love it though

Maku

Cannon means true to the story, not fan made, 100% source material and fact in said universe/story.
