It's obvious even at this point that something happened to those kids especially when talking about pain forcing them to grow up but you can actually see that pain on Konan's face as she listens. Besides a super cool jutsu, her mannerisms and her face are drawn so well that it's imho more sophisticated than any character drawing from entire Naruto series from pure artistic point of view. And that expression on her face is super sad and beautiful at the same time. You can just feel her pain.

Basically give a knife to your 10 children, incite them to stab 3 to death and hope that's enough fear and pain to keep the rest safe... Or the ninja world equivalent of MAD - mutually assured destruction with atomic bombs. So far they have only been used once.
