2025-02-08 04:06:18 +0000 UTCThanks for the reaction Evie! This is one of my favorite episodes, and like many of them has a theme the writers wove into the storyline. In this case, variants of the Shan Yu volcano test. Each of the crew seems to pop up with a "real you" reflection in the episode: Mal has his "protect the crew" core showing with everything from immediately diving on Wash during the ambush, to keeping him focused away from fear and torture, and at the end checking to make sure everyone is ok after the fight. Wash's insecurities melt into his determination to save Mal, Zoe's solid love for Wash, her calm under stress, seeing Mal's ear cut off, or not even flinching to follow Mal's lead teasing Wash about getting it on (proof there is no romantic competition). You can see the core in each -Kaylee, River, Simon, Book, and Jayne's (who Mal took to the volcano last episode) willingness to fight even if he might be expected to resent Mal after the Ariel events.
