So "Rita" the living legend, the Angel of Verdun. She has the same name as the one in Groundhog Day, Rita. I think it might be an homage to the previous movie. "You look like an angel in the snow."

If they believed that they didn't stand a chance at the beach, that the war is lost, that they were all going to die. Then it makes sense to fight the night before to try and change that. If they were going to die in the morning anyway they can fight the night before. As long as they can follow someone like The Angel of Verdun.
