Grr!! Patreon stole my reply. I just said I came around to really liking Dylan's Dean, and that I was super curious what episode in S11 you're referring to. 😊

It's a shame that you don't have a lot to say linda😂😂😂😂 only kidding. I love your comments. They are always thought out and informative☺

I admit the first time i watched this episode i was not impressed. It actually took me watching it with another reactor to appreciate it. There's an episode in season 11 that's the same for me, in that the reactor changed my opinion on the episode. I think maybe a second watch may be what it would take for you too. Or not. I really love this episode now and look forward to it in season 9. I think some of the "filler" episodes are better in these later seasons than they were in the earlier seasons. don't worry, though, there are still some amazing storyline related episodes this season. I also am not fond of this young Dean, but I think he does a good job at the end conveying his emotions when he sees Sammy in the car. I also love that we know Dean had Sonny in his life, even for a short time, and he had Bobby. He had good adult male role models in his life that helped mold him. I am not a John fan.

Great reaction! ❤️ Yeah, in every season, we do get a fair few "filler" episodes that don't deal directly with the main storyline. It's just the way it had to be with the format of the 22 episodes, once a week thing. But I tend to enjoy the fillers, even though I am also anxious to move forward on the overarching plotline. Actually this is one of my favorite MOTW episodes this season. 😁 But it definitely had to grow on me. I was a bit like you the first time I watched it, just thinking it was an enjoyable episode, but not a favourite. And I agree that Dylan Everett (who plays Dean here) looks physically, significantly different from Brock Kelly (who plays Dean in After School Special) and from Jensen himself. I mean, he has brown eyes for one thing. Lol! So, it threw me for a loop the first time too. But on subsequent rewatches I've been able to pick up on a lot of the Dean-isms that Dylan includes in the performance like the way he holds himself, and the way he licks his lips, or the way he pulls on his ear when he's nervous. They're subtle, but I see them now. I also like the vulnerability he gives to Dean's character at this point in Dean's life. He's still young, barely 16, never kissed a girl. So different from the Dean we know, so I appreciate that he brought that out in the character. Brock's Dean is over a year older than this Dean. And I actually believe that Dean's experience at Sonny's explains why he was so much more brash and tough, sarcastic and cavalier (in other words, much closer to the Dean we know today) when we see him in After School Special. I believe it was because he'd begun perfecting his armor, hiding behind his roughness and learning to put on the devil-may-care facade that Dean hides behind so often. I think staying at Sonny's was the last time that he ever considered leaving the family business, and having a different life. But, as we see at the end, he couldn't put his own happiness in front of Sam. (Both because he missed him, and because he knew Sam needed him.) Which of course hasn't changed a bit. He still puts Sam ahead of everything, including his own wants and needs. (This is not to say that he doesn't need his brother more than anything - cause he does - but just that he's willing to go without, or sacrifice whatever he needs to in order to save Sam and keep him safe.) I also think his experience with Robin is why he immediately sabotaged what he had going with the girl he liked in After School Special. Remember, he was dating "Caroline Forbes" - 😜 - but then he started making out with another girl, as soon as it seemed to get a bit serious between them. I think that was because of what happened with Robin. He wasn't going to get close with another girl just to leave her behind again. Lastly, in S2 when Dean is talking to Gordon, the first time they meet, he's telling him about a time he hunted with John, and they killed the monster, and then took it out to the woods and burned it while Sammy was waiting in the car. He says he was 16 years old, and it occurred to him then, that other kids his age had a completely different life than he'd ever have. "So," he tells Gordon, "right then I just kind of...embraced the life." It's my belief that the hunt he describes there to Gordon, is this job that John came and took him away from Sonny's for. I believe it was after leaving Sonny's, that he just accepted he was never going to have a different kind of life, so he just "embraced" the hunter's path. That thought always makes me very torn, because I do think hunting is in Dean's blood, I think it's what fulfills him the most, and he does seem to miss it a lot if he stops. I definitely think it's what he's meant to do, but I also wish he'd let himself have something more too. But that is so much easier said than done in their world. Anyway, all my ridiculous rambling is just to say that having watched this one quite a few times, and slowly connected it all to Dean's back story, I really, really enjoy it now. 😊 But I had similar thoughts to you the first time I watched it. However, the MOTW itself was one I enjoyed right off the bat. I thought Timmy was adorable, and I loved Dean with him, because you know - Dean and kids! 😍😍 But I found the Mom's ending really sweet and sad as well. She just couldn't let go of protecting her baby. So, it was nice to see her ghostly self realize she wasn't protecting him, she was hurting him, and then show her true face to her son one more time and tell him she loved him. Anyway, I'm so sorry for this insane diatribe about Dean and this episode. 😄 I really enjoyed your reaction, and look forward to the next one, as always. ❤️ P.S. I don't carry the animosity towards John that others in the fandom do, (I have a complicated relationship with John! 😄) but I absolutely want to smack him in the face for leaving Dean at Sonny's, and then just unceremoniously demanding he come back as soon as he shows up. Grr!
