I've watched this movie many times, years apart. In the first few times I saw it I was shocked at the end when he says he wants to live there. But later... now I realize he really did enjoy the many years he spent there living the same day over and over. Also he knows it so well it would really be the best place to live. I could even understand if he were afraid to leave the town... that could be the sequel!, lol...

I had not thought of it in that way, that he was never trying very hard, that he was not living up to his potential, and that's what it means to live a life half empty. And then towards the end that he had become more present which affected everything as well as his outlook for the better. I always thought that somehow we are all Phil. The one difference is that he's living the same day but we live our days almost identically and therefore we are also just doing it over and over. If we don't recognize that one day could be different from the day before then it might as well be the same day over and over, or the same week over and over. If there is no growth then nothing changes and nothing moves forward and we might as well be stuck just like Phil was. Then it's just semantics.
