Every episode I fall a little deeper in love with Jensen Ackles.

8,5/10!

What did you think of this episode??

I agree. Dean is interesting in that I think he knows hunting still isn’t the life Sam wants (deep down), and he wants what’s best for him. But he also loves him more than anything and doesn’t want to be alone, and also thinks being with family is best. He’s really leaning into the “we are hunters. We hunt” aspect right now, though. I’m interested to see your other factor regarding Sam when the time comes 😀.

Sarai

😄 I know, I know. 😁

I agree with pretty much everything you say here. It does feel a bit OOC for Sam, but without going into spoiler territory, I'll say, that I've thought the same thing as you about Sam's mental state playing a role in his decision not to look for Dean. (I have another factor that I'll talk about later. 😁) And I agree that Dean needs to be more understanding of Sam wanting to hang it up, and stop hunting. But I know Dean would never want to quit, and I think he panics a bit when he thinks about losing his baby brother as a hunting partner. Man, I love this show!! 😁

Linda Moore

No, I think you did a great job. And now Evie has met why I hate the beginning of Season 8. Could it be Benny or Amelia, ummm.....

Susan Stork

Lol! I know, it's always tough to traverse comments and remain spoiler free. 😁

Linda Moore

Ah, ditto. Can't really add or say more.

Season 8 Sam and Dean are seriously sexy. I absolutely love Sam’s hair here and slight scruff, and Dean is so hot in purgatory and the first scene where we see him. I like Season 8 quite a lot but a few things bother me, particularly around its treatment of Sam's character. To me, it’s out of character for Sam not to look for Dean obsessively. We’ve seen Sam lose his shit for a full season when he was trying to help Dean out of his deal in Season 3. We saw what Sam was like after losing Dean in Mystery Spot and in Season 4; he tried to trade places with Dean in hell, and became basically suicidal, revenge driven and cold when he couldn’t save Dean. Sam just NOT looking doesn’t fit his character. The above being said, I I think it’s important to remember that Sam has just come off of a year being tormented by hallucinations of the devil, and having trouble identifying what’s real, and losing Bobby. This is after being soulless and tortured in hell. I don't think his mental state was exactly good here, so I can kind of see the reasoning. Dean is definitely badass in this episode, and we can see how hard he is right now after a year in purgatory. His time in purgatory is very interesting. You can really see how affected he is by his experience with how he gets triggered by the kids playing, and him chosing to sit in the hard floor with the bed at his back instead of on the soft bed where he’d be more exposed. He’s actually kind of scary right now, with the intense way he stared Sam down as he played Kevin's messages. On the other hand, the look he gives Sam when he orders him a burger is priceless. These contrasts make Dean really interesting here. I totally understand Dean being hurt and angry that Sam didn’t look for him. I also understand him being disappointed in Sam for not helping Kevin. I’m definitely on board with him in these two aspects. What I don’t agree with, however, is Dean being angry that Sam quit hunting and being dismissive of Sam's relationship. Side note, this is part of why I don’t ship Dean with anyone because he is often dismissive of romantic relationships, while placing family on a pedestal. Anyway, Sam never wanted to hunt in the first place, but circumstances have kept him in it for years. Now, as Sam said, hunting has gotten everyone he loves killed (as far as he knew). Sam literally sacrificed himself and jumped into a cage with the devil, where he was tortured for hundreds of years, to stop the apocalypse, so I don't think he owes the world to keep hunting, especially when it’s cost him everyone. Aywat, great reaction, Evie! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the rest of this season. I, personally, like the second half better overall, but the early episodes have some great stuff, too.

I always assumed that things like hunger, sleep and maybe hair growth too! were a bit dulled in purgatory. 😁 I actually really love Jared's hair in this season too. I know lots of people don't, but I think it's gorgeous!

This episode is SO full of STUFF! And there are a lot of things I want to say that I can't yet because SPOILERS! 😩😩 Lol! So let's start with Sam. Here is my issue with him not looking for Dean. (or Kevin!) I definitely understand Sam's reasoning for giving up hunting, and I don't hold that against him at all. He has the right to choose not to be a hunter. But - he definitely should have tried to save/help Kevin. He knew where HE went, knew Crowley took him, and that because of that, he was in incredible danger, and he just left him. He just left a 17 year old kid, in the hands of the King of hell. What??! And not looking for Dean was completely wrong, imo. It would be one thing if he'd TRIED to look, and simply couldn't find him, so finally he just moved on. But he didn't put an ounce of effort into it. He didn't know what had happened to him, sure - but that means that there was no way to KNOW that he was actually dead. (which he wasn't) So, for all he knew Dean was being held somewhere, or was trapped in misery. (which he kind of was) Sam is very smart, and if he'd looked AT ALL, he probably could have figured out relatively easily where Dean was, but he didn't even try. Even when Dean spent the year with Lisa we know that he was looking for a way to get Sam out the whole time. In 6x01 Dean tells Sam, "I collected hundreds of books trying to find a way to get you out." So, yeah, I completely understand Dean's hurt and frustration and I share it. I have theories about why Sam did what he did, but they'll have to wait, cause spoilers. 😏 LOL! I'll simply say that even though I disagree with his choices, I still love Sam to bits, of course, and love that, as always, the show presents us with conflicts where we can see both sides. Your reaction to the scene with Amelia was exactly the same as mine. I don't understand her attitude. Lol! She's so rude to him for accidentally hitting a dog and then bringing the dog in for treatment and care. Like - what? Lol! And why would you force someone who doesn't want a dog, to take the dog? 🤔🤔 I was frowning at that the first time through too. Now, Dean. So, right off the bat, I'll simply say that Purgatory Dean might be the hottest thing ever. 🤤🤤😄😄 He is an absolute badass, and makes dirt and blood somehow incredibly sexy. 😁 Next, I love that I was expecting to see him, in Purgatory, running and hiding from monsters, fighting when he had to, of course, but basically - being hunted. But it's obvious from the very first Purgatory flashback that Dean is very much STILL the one doing the hunting, even in a place populated entirely by monsters, he's still a hunter. Have I mentioned that I love this character? 😍 Having said that, I think for Dean, Purgatory was very much the same as a soldier in a warzone. And now that he's back, it's gonna take time to adjust. I think it was why he was staring at the Doritos and snacks in the vending machine. I've heard vetrans say that one of the things that was really hard to readjust to in coming home, was just the plethora of choices available, as well as the like "normality" of everyday life. It's a lot to take in and get used to again. If you notice too, not only is Dean on edge and slightly jumpy (when the kids are running past with their fake battle, and when he's sitting in the room listening to the car alarm go off) like a lot of soldiers are when they come home, he's also sitting on the ground, because sitting comfy and/or relaxing is probably impossible. He's relied on his instincts and had to stay on his toes at all times for a year, so I can't imagine that feeling is easy to let go of. Also, Dean says that Purgatory was pure, and it took me a minute to figure out what he meant by that, but I know some soldiers feel that way about battle. There is no time for second guessing, no hard decisions or choices. It's just kill or be killed, and I imagine there is a kind of purity or "simplicity" in that. Boils down to instincts and skill, and for someone like Dean, someone who has spent their life (especially his adult life) wrestling with hard choices and heartbreak, I understand his appreciation in being able to give that up. So, I just wanted to clarify, cause the show expected you to know by his teeth, lol, that Benny is a vampire. And yes, I wanted to know more about him immediately, and was also so intrigued by what had happened to Cas, and (enjoyably) frustrated that I had to wait to find out more. Anyway, I'm sorry I rambled on for so long here, but I knew I was bound to. 😄 S8 brings up so many intriguing ideas, questions and conflicts. So excited to go through it with you. And I'll try to deal with my sadness of going back to one SPN a week for a while longer. You spoiled us. 😁 P.S. I love the thumbnail for this episode (Sir, indeed!) and what you wrote about falling more in love with Jensen every episode. I so feel ya! 😍😍

Funny how Dean was in Purgatory for a year, but his hair is still short like he's been getting it cut regularly and Sam's hair is longer... I love Jared's hair like this. I know what's going to happen this season with the boys, but I think you made valid points from both sides. Dean's been in purgatory trying to stay alive and he finds out that Sam didn't look for him which clearly hurt him and he has his friend that he made, Benny (who is a vampire) and then with Sam, when Dick exploded and Cass and Dean were gone too, he had no idea if they were still alive and with Sam, he never knew what it was like to have a family because he was a baby when Mary was killed. So when he was all alone, he wanted that. Like you mentioned when Dean lived a normal life with Lisa and Ben for a year. I like how they are letting us know what happened with each of them through flashbacks.
