Outlander 5x12 - "Never My Love" FULL REACTION

Watch here : https://vimeo.com/807094181 (password : Evie27)

With everything going on in this episode I completely forgot to mention how much I loved how this episode was made, the back and forth with her fantasy and reality, her way of dissociating from all that was happening to her. The music the whole time as well. Really liked it!

9/10!

What did you think of this finale??

Comments

Oh, forgot to mention: The acting was superb as was the makeup. The mark of a good show is how believable it feels and this one was enough to turn your stomach. Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughn wanted to show just about everything in the script (multiple sexual assaults) but the production team (of which Cait and Sam are a part) decided to let the audience use their imagination. Also, if you go back and watch it again (as horrifying as that sounds) you will notice at least 55 different things from the disassociation sequence that related to past episodes. This episode was masterfully done and very hard to take.

There was a drastic difference between the book (Book 6 "A Breath of Snow and Ashes") and what was portrayed in the show. While both were horrific, the show was worse. In the book, she was actually raped by only one man but assaulted by three and only one who beat her. The show indicated that she was raped by multiple men and left it to the imagination of the viewer to wonder how many men actually assaulted her. You believed that all the men took a turn. But if you read the script for this episode (https://www.starz.com/extras/outlander/scripts/512-never-my-love/), there were only the four that you saw (Cuddy Brown, Lionel Brown, Arvin Hodgepile, and someone named Kendrick).

Hi Evie, Oh man... I was dreading this one... It's so difficult to watch, but there are moments that I just love. Chellybeenz pointed out most of the "easter eggs" from Claire's safe place that I was going to mention. The orange was from S2 when she slept with the King to get Jamie released from the bastille and she took an orange with her when she left, The painting on the wall that she was looking at was their house on Fraser's Ridge, Germain was playing with a toy dragonfly, the vase from the first episode, Jamie wrapping her in a blanket saying "your shaking so hard it's making my teeth rattle" from the first episode when she first got on the horse with him. The vase from the first episode. In her safe place Jocasta and Murtagh were together and did you notice that Fergus had both of his hands. I also just have to say that Lauren Lyle who plays Marsali looked so pretty in Claire's safe place with her bangs. One of the policemen who came to the door in her safe place was the actor who played Lionel Brown. I loved seeing Ian put on his war paint, he's become such a badass, but still the sweet Ian that we first met and love. Seeing Ian and Fergus willing to kill those men for Claire because they love her so much as a mother and an auntie. When Jamie was bringing Claire home, they stopped at a stream and she was wrapped in tartan... that is very similar to S1 The Devil's Mark when Jamie rescued her from the witch trial and they stopped at a stream before he took her to the rocks to go home. Another thing that the creators of the show pointed out was that Jamie lit the cross when Claire was in trouble, not when he was trying to gather his militia, not for the battle with the Regulators, but when Claire was in trouble...

Yeah, this one was so horrific. (But as an aside, the ACTING is OFF THE CHAIN. Why Caitriona did not get an award for this episode, I have no idea.) Season 6 is short because it was filmed during COVID and Cait was pregnant (and you can tell in some of the episodes) but it's a DOOZY! Buckle up for the bumpy ride! Also, the show got an intimacy coach and toned down the sex a bit -- likely because Cait was pregnant. But there are still some beautiful and tender moments with Claire and Jamie (and a few hawt scenes!)

As painful as this was to watch, the acting, as always, was incredible! This was 1 of the top 3 most traumatic episodes for me along with Jamie's rape and torture in the prison with Jack Randal and the death of Hope during childbirth in Paris. I absolutely sobbed during all of them. When a show can elicit that much emotion, it is incredibly well done! I am absolutely obsessed with this series and so happy you're reacting to it. Really enjoying re-watching it with you.

LoriRae

Thank you so much for this reaction!! You sobbed at all the same places I did! Jordie was the man that Claire was treating in her surgery when they were attacked! This episode was a masterpiece in my opinion with all of the Easter Eggs from previous seasons that helped us understand that these things were helping her disassociate from what was happening.

There are a lot of "Easter eggs" in the dream sequences, firstly the house itself was on the cover of a magazine Claire looked at in the Surgeons lounge back in ep 5. The orange she picked up, as you said, that was her taking her dignity, harking back to Season 2 when she went to see the King and she took the orange when she left. The blue vase harks back to the very first episode when she was looking at the vase in the window. The wall hangings from Lallybroch were up in one of the rooms, there was a microscope on one of the tables. The dragonfly toy is from the dragonfly in amber. The red dress, from the red dress in France. When Jamie says "you're shaking so hard it's making my teeth rattle" is what Jamie said to her in the first episode. The patch on Young Ians uniform has a native American silhouette on it. As for travelling through the stones, yes they believe that you do need someone on the other side, but more importantly it seems you have to be thinking about where you're going too. Hence they came home. It was certainly a traumatic episode (we don't watch Outlander for the comedy though it's nice when we get some). The acting as always superb, but Caitriona Balfe is just amazing here. Onwards to a very short, 8 episode only, season 6. Caitriona was pregnant during filming, so you'll notice her baggier outfits trying to hide it. Also it was filmed during the pandemic so there were some limitations, but a lot of the dialogue is directly from the book. Hope you continue to enjoy.

Chellybeenz

Oh wow two!!! I can't wait to go home and watch it.
