2023-02-06 22:46:50 +0000 UTCPlease... accept my apology for length. - "Time is a lot of the things people say God is. ...God and time both having no end. ...not mountains, not armies, no pain nor loss.. nothing can stand against time. Ashes to ashes... dust to dust... But, if time is to be equated to God, then memory must be the devil." ~ Clare Fraser Yet Clare's words are profoundly rebutted... or perhaps cleverly doubled-down upon... by the Menzies' family priest, who says.. "No one's EVER lost, who's not forgotten." The episode begins with the discovery of penicillin and from that, one strand of a web starts to form. Clare achieves a successful procedure using penicillin with Keziah. This is made even better by Evie's pride and admiration for Marseli learning in the surgery, during Keziah's tonsillectomy. (BTW, does this procedure mean Keziah is the first human to receive penicillin?) But the successful use of penicillin for the tonsillectomy prompts the memory of Graham Menzies's death from penicillin and the still deeper memory of Graham Menzies' triggering a longing for Jamie from Graham's lament: "One more scar, nothing worth braiding over" This wonderful episode weaves other strands of time and intention web in as well. Roger finds Bonnett's diamond to initiate another strand. Trion's move to pardon all Regulators but Murtagh.. prompts the strand of the Ardsmire Prison roles as Knox's 'no stone' unturned which somehow results in the adoption of the new kitten; Adso. Clare's metaphor of God's web of eternity, intentionality, causation and consequence... plays out throughout the entire episode... ever so poignantly. As does Bree and Roger's focus on the importance of words given, gotten, understood, and acted upon. So yes... I believe this episode is deeper than its simple main story and belongs with Faith, Battle Joined, Devil's Mark, Freedom-Whiskey/A. Malcom, First Wife, Birds-Bees, an episode you haven't gotten to yet called; Never My Love, and of course, the greatest of all, Dragonfly. I agree Evie, IMHO, this, the 5x5 episode, is one of the greats.

I love that the show runners made the decision to fix some of these omissions. Also, Joe Abernathy has a much bigger part in the books. He knows the truth and Claire sort of leaves Bree in his oversight when she goes back to Jamie. I love his character.

2023-01-29 16:26:14 +0000 UTCHi Evie, I agree that this is a great episode. I love the beginning when they showed clips from past episodes. But, I also love the first episode of the season with the scenes between Jamie and Brianna right before the wedding. Can’t get enough of Jamie and Brianna scenes. Plus Jamie back in his kilt. They did mention in Dragonfly In Amber that they were in London when they heard of the Reverend’s passing. They were on their way back to London when Roger asked them to stay the night and that’s when Roger took Brianna around Scotland and they met Geillis and dug up the truth about Brianna. Meanwhile Claire was visiting Lallybroch and visiting the battlefield where she found the Fraser Clan rock. Claire was right, meeting her patient, Mr. Menzies, ultimately reunited her and Jamie. Did you realize that Menzies is the last name of the actor who played Frank and Black Jack? Tobias Menzies who is phenomenal. But as always with Outlander, buckle up for the rest of the season. There will be highs and lows just like a roller coaster.
