Still painting...

Hello everyone, I haven't finished painting all the characters, there are twenty-nine in all, some of which have younger variations that will appear in flashbacks, but I believe I've already passed half of the work.

I'm trying to vary the ways of painting in order to find the best techniques, so some characters end up better than others. I intend to give back correcting the details to achieve quality uniformity.

I haven't prepared anything special to show you right now, but I didn't want to go more than seven days without a new post here. At the moment I have Wanda open in Blender, so it might be worth posing her for a quick render. Here it goes:


Here you can see that I created a shader for Blender imitating how the game's shader works. The idea is to be able to check the result of the textures while I paint, without having to import them into the game engine.

It turned out to be a spaghetti mess that I'm not proud of, but at this point, we already have such nice graphics in the game engine, that I'm not at all concerned about generating pre-rendered images.

I've been posting some screenshots of the painting process for some characters on Discord, in the "show-off" channel. It's to make me present during this stage, so I don't see the need to post the whole process, but if you're curious to know how it's going, take a look there from time to time.

I want to come back with some video capture soon,  but first I want to change some of the character's movement mechanics.

Oh dam ! I write on wrong message sorry XD Wow thanks for all these details. I understand that you had to make choices due to lack of time and resources. I hope you'll be able to do as much as you want. As for the park scene You're right to concentrate on the major characters. You can make cameos of certain secondary characters in the background or use objects or photos to create easter eggs. This would be fun and would delight those who explore. But do as you please.

Hello, thank you! What happened was a damming of characters due to limitations. Brendon's aunt and Wanda's wife should be introduced in the first chapter, Brendon's biological mother should appear in flashbacks, and Tiffany should be introduced on campus in the second chapter, in addition to the characters that appear only in the third chapter. There are still characters that aren't in the script but exist, like the ancestors of the redheads I mentioned, and Angel's family that would have a game of their own. There are still characters that exist in limbo, like blurred ghosts, and will probably take shape at some point, for example, I know there's a woman who works in Wanda's studio and lives in the same building as Mika, but I don't know anything else yet about her. But of course, I'll focus on the most important characters first, the secondary ones can come in later.

Hello, It's already a great improvement! I didn't know there were so many characters, but it's true when you think about it, there are variants like those in the stage 3 demo. In any case, the character renderings you've posted on Discord look great. I like Angel's skin tone. For the pre-rendering I agree with you, you've already got a great render in your engine so there's no need to give yourself more work with that. I'm really curious to see the "mosaic" of re-textured characters. Thanks in any case for taking the time to show us this. And if you don't feel like it or feel you have nothing to show here, don't worry about not posting anything for 7 days, we understand.
