Theory 1: He was simply that crazy to begin with Theory 2: The polluted river made him crazy (like lead poisoning or smth) Theory 3: A much more depressing one, where his brothers Bushi and Shoe actually existed, and were killed trying to stand up to the Army, as everyone's livelihoods depended on the river (might explain the kid with the burn as well). Dock then went mad with grief and tried to imitate them to keep them alive in some sad way.

2023-06-07 10:48:14 +0000 UTCMy headcanon is that Sokka was being extra precautious because he wasn't sure how long it would take for them to get to where they needed to, specially since they didn't have a good and updated map of the fire nation. But as they traveled through the fire nation, probably acquiring more accurate maps and information, they realized they didn't need to be so strict with the schedule since they would arrive much sooner than anticipated.

When the gaang is first riding into town you can see Toph is holding on to Sokka's arm and when Dock swings the oar over them Sokka actually pushes Toph down so she doesn't get hit. It goes by so fast you need to be looking for it, but it's such a great detail they remembered. Whenever they are traveling try to keep an eye on Toph, I think there are a bunch of scenes like this in the show where the others are making sure she is safe when they aren't in a place where her seismic sense works.

She was blocked from the mortal realm because the river was so polluted and only able to get back after they cleaned it. It's a theory that has never been confirmed as far as I'm aware, but it does make the most sense.
