2023-06-03 15:42:35 +0000 UTCI was gonna do this later, but I don't know how far ahead you guys record, so...VERY IMPORTANT (NON-SPOILER) DETAIL REGARDING SEASON 5! A lot of people don't know this when watching the show and their judgement becomes skewed because of it. Steven Universe was supposed to actually have a 6th season. However, there was one particular plot point that the execs (really) did not like, so they gave Rebecca Sugar a choice; Cut out that plot point or lose a season. Rebecca chose the latter. Because of this, they didn't get a season 6 and season 5 comes across to a lot of fans as "rushed." Personally, I have no problem with it and enjoyed the ending. Either way, I feel it's important information to have. The only reason we got the SU Movie and Future as epilogues was because the Crewniverse practically begged the execs to allow it. A sentiment I agree with because I feel the epilogue story is very important.

2023-06-03 07:13:03 +0000 UTCI get the lead time, which is *why* I think it was meant to be indirectly addressing a lot of the hateful rhetoric from 45's campaign (as well as a few of his primary opponents). I think they (like a lot of us at that time) couldn't *really* imagine a scenario where enough of America was on board with the overtly racist and anti-LGBT+ messaging (as opposed to the traditional dog whistles used by such candidates in the past) that he would win. They expected this to be airing in a world where sanity had prevailed but there were still a lot of folks upset about things they'd heard family and friends endorsing - not one where fear and hatred had carried the day. Andy's rhetoric when he first shows up hit close to home for a lot of the fandom, and this felt like an attempt to excuse or justify such viewpoints. I don't believe for a minute that's what they were going for, and at this point it doesn't come off that way at all, but at the time it hit differently.

2023-06-03 07:08:20 +0000 UTCI doubt it was purposefully meant for the presidential race, just because production takes forever and Rebecca Sugar already enjoys narratives about closed minded people learning to accept new ideas, but I definitely agree that the airing schedule that did happen made so many people feel uncomfortable 😭 it also probably got a full half hour because it was a Thanksgiving special and they wanted to bait more people into watching with the episode title + runtime

That would explain why what could be considered more of a "filler" episode got a full half hour. It's not so bad now, but it did *not* play well when it premiered.
