Honestly, I never even noticed that Longshot was facing away from Jet. I just saw him knock an arrow and assumed that the mercy kill was the next thing that happened, just off-screen. I was a bit confused when I learned that others were confused by the scene. Just one of those times when the fact that I'm really not very observant at all when it comes to animation made a show work far better for me.

But what we DO see is Smellerbee fixing Jet’s face, assumingely closing his eyes to lay him to rest.

When Longshot drew his bow and aimed it at the other side of the room when the rest of the group left, it was supposed to tell that he mercy killed him with the arrow in his head as the others left him.

The creators worked on both these show and were on the live action team until they left for creative differences from the live action adaptation. Korra is very much tied to this series (Avatar) so you still got a lot of episodes to go :).
