A lot of people who insist Lapis was the "real abuser" do not seem to have done much research on how abuse actually operates and manifests. In addition there's the fact that technically we don't KNOW what went down while they were fused as Malachite so any arguments based on that are spurious. What we DO know is that Jasper coerced Lapis into fusing in Jail Break and in this episode is throwing out every DARVO tactic in the book at her and is trying to coerce her into fusing again.

Like bigger and stronger and (no offense to Rubies, I love you) smarter than Rubies. Amethysts and Jaspers are Quartzes, and Rose Quartzes naturally would be too.

2023-05-06 08:03:17 +0000 UTCJasper was keeping her in a prison cell on the ship and forced Lapis back to Earth to be their informant/guide. According to Rebecca Sugar and heavily implied in the show, Jasper heaped emotional and physical abuse on Lapis so that Jasper could feel superior to her in their time together. Lapis may have participated in a toxic relationship but like those feelings of self-hatred and guilt for finding pleasure in lashing out at your abuser or hating them or enjoying the times you were in a position of power or control over them are actually pretty common with survivors. Unlike in most media, in actual abusive relationships you don't have perfect and innocent victims and the demand that survivors have to have been that otherwise they deserved or were complicit in their abuse is extremely damaging and is often a reason they will return to abusive relationships. Of course Lapis taking out her feelings on Jasper is wrong and unhealthy, but like that doesn't make her a villain or not a victim. It makes her a flawed, hurt person trying to process her trauma and needing help.

2023-05-05 23:06:01 +0000 UTCIf we're looking at the symbolism here, then Jasper is worse imo. She FORCED Lapis into a relationship (fusion) while belittling and manipulating her. Obviously, Lapis hurt Jasper a bit as well, but it could most be "reactive abuse". I mean, she was literally stuck with Jasper. Also, it seems like Lapis has very low self-esteem, which is common with abuse survivors. She thinks she's bad, but really a lot of her behavior makes sense.

If possible, both Bismuth episodes should be watched together since they're directly connected! I don't know if that aligns with your streaming service + schedule, but it's just a heads up.

2023-05-05 20:08:07 +0000 UTCYeah, like Jasper pressured and intimidated Lapis in an attempt to persuade her to fuse with her, but Lapis was the one who kept them trapped and took all her frustrations out on her, acting as the captor after being a prisoner for so long. But she is now disturbed by her actions and scared of taking charge as a result. And Jasper feels a bit...unstable in this episode. Like the whole Malachite situation definitely affected her mental health too in a negative way. Again, it's not good how she tries to pressure Lapis again, but Jasper acts like she is straight-up addicted and like she's a bit out of it (she had a huge amount of pride, but here she is practically begging for Lapis to fuse with her.)

But you'll need to check a different streaming service for season 5.. Idk why Hulu doesn't have it (unless its bc of that one episode that got the show shortened but that'd be dumb).

Peopple are biased because Jasper is the bigger one and has a more abusive *attitude*, but Lapis heaped actual physical (or, rather, psychic) abuse on Jasper and, in doing so, added to her own trauma. A handsy creep insisting a someone makeout with them isn't innocent, but that is not carte blanche for the person they're harassing to give their consent, then lock the creep in a basement and torture them until they like it.
