I personally watched the movie before seeing the show, and didn't feel confused at all. Obviously there are some things from the season 2 finale that have an effect on the status quo (which I won't mention here to avoid spoilers), but nothing that would make the movie hard to understand. Maybe just a little "oh, that's probably something that happened in season 2" here or there. It's a pretty standalone story, and I know plenty of people who have enjoyed it without having seen the show first. Of course, I would love for them to finish season 2! But all I (and others who have made similar suggestions) am saying is just that if they're not going to, we'd really like them to at least still watch the movie. It would be a shame for them to miss out on what many people consider to be the best part!

(And I'd still HIGHLY recommend the movie, even if you don't continue the show for now -- it tones down the goofiness and takes a much more serious tone, which sounds like what you guys have been hoping for!
