Just a sidenote, but I honestly love Blue Pearl's design the most. She is so pretty <3

Meerkats in Disguise

not just that but it gives context on the fact that sapphire was humming her and Ruby's song to comfort herself in the jail cell when she thought they would kill her.

Xavier Avery

The Steven Universe crew had to fight really hard to keep the show going with the representation. They were told if they moved forward there was a very real chance the whole thing would get cancelled, and they decided to push for it. Other showrunners have said that Sugar and the crew really opened the door for openly gay characters on screen.

Hikka

The Cops being Gay was hindered by disney. Im pretty sure the creator revealed all the things disney gave him pushback on. the cops were one of those things.

Down D Stairs

There are still four episodes left in season 2 btw.

Brian Loie Medalla Llavan

Yea cut out not canceled, cause Rebecca said she has no intention of continuing

Growlingisland 5

show was in fact canceled because the last arc in homeworld was supposed to be much longer and Steven Universe Future was supposed to have 2-3 seasons what could have included more backstory for specific characters (it's a spoiler here so I wont say who) but yeah, they told about some of the stories in second art book that they had to cut out.

Vanyahani

What do you mean by the show being canceled? Cause it had 5 original seasons, then a movie, then another 6th season and it wrapped up pretty good in my opinion

Growlingisland 5

Just want to chime in one more thing about the show going through struggles. Yes, the show was canceled, and there is still a lot for the world to improve on in terms of treating people with respect and doing the right thing. The US definitely still has reservations about the LGBTQ but one thing that should be noted is that I believe a large portion of the animation was done in a different country, Korea I think, but don't quote me on that. The point is since another country was also involved in the show a large portion of the blame for the show's cancellation does go to them as well. It wasn't just the US stopping the show it was also other outside factors. Hope this adds a little more context. And if anyone has the proper studio or more information feel free to state the correct information below this comment.

Juan Carlos Jaimes Jr.

Fun Fusion Fact, if u guys didn't know: They are meant to represent the (romantic, platonic, familial, etc.) relationships of the individuals within the fusion. Let's take Garnet and Malachite: Garnet portrays the strong and healthy relationship between Ruby and Sapphire. On the other hand, Malachite portrays the unhealthy and toxic relationship between Jasper and Lapis Lazuli. You'll learn more about fusions later on in the show, but it's good to keep this in mind.

Jaena A.

Just to clarify, here's the order: Steven Universe (5 seasons), Steven Universe: The Movie, & Steven Universe Future.

Jaena A.

all the seasons including the movie and steven universe futer, is on HBO Max if you have it

Growlingisland 5

Did you guys notice in the humming, it was the same melody from the last season finale song "(stronger than you?)"

SonicMcCall

Technically this wasn't the finale! The final episode of season 2 is log date 7 15 2. There's 2 more sets of 2 episodes in the season. But even then it kind of has a soft ending to it. I believe bc seasons 2 & 3 were meant to go together. Either way there would've been a 3 parter bc it ends on an odd amount of episodes. So still super appreciated that you did 3 episodes together to keep the finale in one. Also season 5 might not be on the streaming service you're using! But there is a 5th season :)

Honey

Yeah SU had alot of that too I actually saw a video of the UK version of "We Need to Talk" and apparently they censored the fusion dance of Rose and Pearl because they thought the mannerisms and faces were too obviously gay and didnt wanna show kids that on tv so they removed like half the dance. Im just glad we got what we got when this came out rather than that much censorship

KaitouKay1412

Hulu has a few of the season 2 episodes in the season 3 slot but they are all in the correct order so they will see them regardless next reaction

KaitouKay1412

they wont miss the episodes they are in the season 3 slot on Hulu due to the screwed up placement on Hulu. They are all in chronological order but some are in the wrong season slot still

KaitouKay1412

I'm pretty sure those episodes they missed will be in season 3, because hulu's order is weird

dai

Kinda surprised you guys didn't bring up the fact that apparently there's a blue diamond & a yellow diamond now

KaitouLuminous

SU was definitely one of the first to have an explicit same sex relationship. and think about this- jail break, the episode where garnet is revealed to be a fusion, was released before gay marriage was even legalized. it’s crazy to think about. rebecca had to fight like crazy to include a lot of the stuff in the show and it’s sad to read some of her interviews where she said she would come out of meetings very shaken. but it really paid off because this show truly paved the way for the owl house and other shows to have such direct representation

Joey

Yeah as a kid I didn't see much queer representation in children's media. closest thing was probably in the movie Paranorman and even then it was like a throwaway joke. the only real content that was made available to me via hulu was like Buffy the Vampire Slayer which is such a great show, Rebecca Sugar definitely helped pave the way.

Santiago

This show is amazing. For the representation not only for lgbt but for nuerodivergent people. Peridot is representation for people on the spectrum. And the show deals with heavy things throughout the series.

Robert Jones

She-ra and the Princesses of Power is a very strong contender for the most GAY cartoon tbh xdd.

Julio Castillo

The sad thing is, many shows may hint or subtly confirm if a character is bi or gay, but most cartoons haven't had a clearly stated gay couple that I can think of... The closest being OK KO, and that was a subtle confirmation at the VERY END in a flash of scenes. I'm glad we're getting representation with shows like Steven Universe and The Owl House for lesbians (not to discredit that Luz is bi), but we haven't had much at all for a legit two-dudes-in-love couple. Most shows get cancelled if they even try, it seems... =/

Cloud Kitsune

One thing I always noticed in the episode where they’re getting the drill is how Amethyst is perfectly fine letting Peridot make rude comments for a laugh until she’s the one who’s being made fun of. So Peridot literally can’t see how that was different then what she was doing before Amethyst got upset. Steven is also good in that episode with how quickly he shuts Peridot down by not understanding her joke like when someone make a joke that’s just them saying rude shit for no reason.

Circuitdoodles

It was canceled and they had to scramble to fit in what they needed to make the end satisfying

Circuitdoodles

definitely not the finale but we appreciate you guys anyway ^^

KuroFem

Fun fact: They made The Answer into a book (in the style of the Little Golden Books.) Also H-Man was right about the lighting, Garnet's eyes are 1 red, 1 blue + 1 purple but the lighting of the episode made them appear darker. Can't wait for the actual ending of season 2 (hopefully you guys will see these comments before recording the next set)!

Kayla Ryan

Yeah there was very little gay representation 8 years ago. To an extent, there really still isn't now. Most of it gets sidelined or put into very small pieces that can be cut for 'international audiences' or gay characters end up being incredibly stereotypical. I can't remember if it was before or after this, but there was also Mr Ratburn from hey arthur which made waves by giving him a husband and doing a wedding. But that was HUGE news. Part of the reason SU was rushed and cancelled was due to controversies with gay representation later on in the show. Also in my home country of the UK they regularly censored that ruby and saphire were gay and in a relationship. I'm really happy you guys brought up the issue, it can feel like people these days think that the gay thing is over and done with and now we are just 'milking' our representation. Whilst Owl house got cancelled because of the gay, other shows like Korra weren't allowed to put in anything gay at all.

wolfiwolfpie

SU wasnt canceled, it ended

Jam

you are absolutely correct, Steven Universe was one of, if not the first, children's cartoon to feature gay representation as more than a "hinted at but not stated" or a finally thing. and even then, people heavily debated that Ruby was male because "there's no way they'd put gay people in children's cartoons" despite the fact that she is called SHE ALL THE TIME. something similar is currently happening with trans rep in children's cartoons. we are starting to get better rep that is somewhat stating it instead of implying, whereas in Steven Universe, Lars was HEAVILY implied to be trans and we still to this day do not know if he really was, since Rebecca Sugar has never confirmed OR denied despite numerous times being asked. i think once her NDA is up, she should be able to come out and confirm or deny that, as Alex Herch has with confirming that Wendy was supposed to be bi, and also that he wanted Dipper to be trans but Disney wouldn't even let that be hinted at.

Jam

Watching Steven Universe as it released was so hectic. Waiting for new episodes either took forever or felt instant.

Strange

As someone who was watching and looking out for specifically gay media- there was and still hardly is any explicitly stated gay main characters. There's more nowadays for sure! But back then? The most we would get in children's cartoons was an implied relationship, or if it was stated then it would hardly ever be shown. Usually if a show had gay rep it was to a side character or hardly ever the focus, they also had a terrible habit of making very...disrespectful representations of the lgbt community, or it was just queer baiting lol. So Steven Universe was genuinely very groundbreaking! I'm fairly certain it is still one of- if not THE queerest children's cartoon to date.

Crude Mood

Yeah it’s not spoiler man they literally saw Blue Diamond the only thing they haven’t seen is like half her face

KaitouKay1412

They might have just not gotten the rights for season 5. HBO Max has the rest of the show at least

KaitouKay1412

yeah steven universe was pretty much the first family cartoon to have openly gay recurring characters. a big part of it is simply the crew behind it, shows like su and the owl house are more in your face and unapologetic about their lgbt themes/characters because they're made by lgbt people themselves. weren't many lgbt women making shows back in the day

MiMiLock

it pains me so much that we can't say the title of the show lol

MiMiLock

There is some VERY important context for Pearl in these episodes. Peridot's comments about what Pearls are, what they are for... Pearls are ornamental, pretty servants. That's all they are. Now consider 'I'll do it for Him/Her' and everything Pearl has been going through. Think of who she is now, compared to that picture Peridot paints. I think this gives enormous context to her struggles, her achievements, and her grief.

William Timmins

Wendy from gravity falls is confirmed bi

TheDarkOrganism

before this era of cartoons the most rep we would get would just be implied but never stated or confirmed, cartoons now and SU included will outright tell you what it stands for and who they represent which is beautiful

Fries

Yeah steven universe was one of the very early cartoons that showcased LGBTQ+ representation, it was practically unheard of at the time, in other countries episodes would be removed, scenes got cut, it was a mess, it's a shame theres an overwhelming amount of hate around SU in the cartoon sphere and it stems from it being representative. It has a good story and has great depictions of internalized issues, discrimination, trauma, and representation in general. but i'm glad its success was able to bring more lgbtq+ friendly cartoons into the sphere

Fries

Remember when Ronaldo spoke wildly about gems hollowing out the Earth?

William Timmins

Well yes but the implications are very clear

VJ Sins

To be fair the reason why the end of the season just rolls directly into the next without something crazy is because originally the show was supposed to have 3 seasons of about 50 episodes but the seasons got split in half so the season 2 finale is just the halfway mark of the originally intended season

Dylan Singewald

If its the one I'm thinking of then I'm super excited, probably my favorite moment of the show.

Dylan Singewald

Right, but that happened in 2019, when the show was ending, /after/ SU, and they were background events, not the focus of any episodes. Same with Applejack and RD's implied marriage, same with Scootaloo's gay aunts. My Litle Pony started before Steven Universe, but it didn't have any explicit rep until after SU had paved the way. Plus, characters like Lyra, Bon-Bon, Durland, Blubs, etc., are side characters, not in the core cast. (Obviously RD and Applejack are core cast members but again, definitely less explicit than the relationships in SU and they were confirmed in the last eps.) SU isn't my favorite show on the planet, but it absolutely paved the way and had a ton of firsts, rep wise, and was a hard-fought battle to get past censors that impacted shows like Gravity Falls, MLP, etc., and still impact shows today.

Hannah

That’s kind of a light spoiler they’ll eventually find out everything they need to know throughout the show

JRax 17

As long as they react to the episodes in order, the season labeling doesn’t really matter

JRax 17

Just to doubly say every time a gem poofs there form changes. At least so far in the show. Pearl changed as did Amethyst and Garnet. And the season has 4 more episodes. Hulu shortened the season for some reason.

High Voltage

Lyra and Bon-Bon proposed on screen and later a picture showed they got married.

Vilmu

Billy here! Yeah you are absolutely right in this show being VERY important to queer rep especially in cartoons, and Rebecca Sugar has told numerous stories of having to really stand her ground to the higher ups repeatedly trying to bully her into removing those scenes from the show. You mentioned Gravity Falls and what little gay rep there is in the show also went through a lot of repression and censorship :/

Cookie

Season 5 of SU is on HBO Max, As well as SU The Movie and SU Future. So I think once you guys are done with season 4, you'll have to switch to HBO Max.

dai

The history behind queerness in cartoons is actually really interesting! The first time we ever got rep in a (western) cartoon was in 2014! There was no kiss, just two women holding hands but it opened up so many flood-gates for other cartoons. For a long-time we have had to wait to the finales for any type of confirmation because shows would be cancelled because of it. That’s why Steven Universe and The Owl House are so revolutionary. Both shows were cancelled because of queer rep but they still put their all into it.

Kailey Anne

It's not a spoiler, we literally just saw and heard the words 'Blue Diamond' in this video.

Seraphem

Yeah, this was pretty much the first 'kids' cartoon to get away with having what is very clearly a major same sex relationship that I can recall. Mostly by selling it to the execs with the deniability of "no no, it's not two women in a relationship, they are alien gem beings who don't have any actual genders." while making clear what was really going on. Prior to this, yeah you had cases of "Oh they are so in a relationship" but it's all via subtext and never made explicit, like the sheriffs in Gravity Falls, or Lyra and Bon-Bon in MLP. Most of those were cases where the show runners and writers really did want to have that relationship in there, but they had to slip it in under the radar of executives that didn't want anything 'controversial' or that would make the show hard to sell to Russia and other overseas places where treating gay people as anything but a vile abomination is outright illegal.

Seraphem

For reference Rose Quartz is a Quartz and Amethyst is a type of Quartz too, additionally so is Jasper so Amethyst was supposed to be around their size

brosenthalUO

Oh god we’re actually Billy I didn’t expect them to commit

Ranginald Vagel

I don't know what it is bust I just don't care about sapphire and ruby.

TrixieTurner

I think I know what you’re referring to and that was very squint and you miss it cause of how controversial that’d be

Golden Witch Beatrice

Hey just to tell you guys, I’ve checked episodes of Su on Hulu and in the future when you react, I think that Hulu doesn’t haven’t the full series. Once you get to the end of season 4 you’ll have to switch to another app

Art Gremlin

Fun Fact! : The little song Ruby and Sapphire are humming before they fuse the second time is the chorus of 'Strong Than You', Garnet's song when she was fighting Jasper during Jailbreak!

perserverantSoul

They still technically don't have a gender right, they just appear female in their physical forms

Astro copjr8

Delete now

Astro copjr8

While it's true that in real life pearls are different, in the show Peridot doesn't consider Pearl an actual Gem because Pearls are so low in the caste system that they're not really considered people. I think this adds more context to that Strong in the Real Way song and episode: Pearls aren't made to be strong, which is another reason why she was bothered by Steven admiring Sugilite's raw power. Also, the gay cops were very much meant to be a thing (they mention "love" in the last episode,) but Alex Hirsch had to fight constant censorship and claim "they're just good buddies" to the higher-ups to get the little we got. At one point he made a video listing some very, very ridiculous censorship attempts he had to deal with concerning all sort of stuff. I'm surprised Gravity Falls was allowed to have its general sense of humor and vibe seeing all that.

Vilmu

and yes as others in the comments have said season 2 ends on a different episode that Hulu lists as part of season 3. The actual season 2 ending is "Log Date 7 15 2." Since the episodes were out of order before now they are just pushed into the wrong season slots sometimes even tho they are in the correct chronological order.

KaitouKay1412

Boom is gonna fold for Blue Diamond i’m calling it now😭

alejandro

Oh!! Ok thanks 😁😁

Topera Otaria

no HBO is correct Hulu has the episodes placed in the wrong season slots even tho they are chronologically correct

KaitouKay1412

Is this the season finale? I thought season 2 had 26 eps, or is it just weird on hbo?

Topera Otaria

The release schedule I think was more because it took 6 months to create a single 11 min episode so the show went on hiatus a lot over the years to get batches of episodes out. But you are correct the executives of Cartoon Network were heavily against the idea of gay relationships at the time and did want to cancel Steven because of it. Rebecca Sugar is a non-binary bisexual woman so her goal behind the Gems as characters was to create non-binary women characters since gems all identify as female even tho they arent physically female and to show that it's okay to be who you wanna be and be with who you wanna be with. CN was against showing that and gay relationships off at the time so they definitely gave her a hard time about it. She had to sacrifice an entire planned season because of it just so they wouldnt randomly cancel the series before the ending.

KaitouKay1412

To follow on from the end comments, Kipo and the age of the wonderbeasts is the first cartoon to have a character openly say they are gay, and that was in 2020.

Jack Middleton

SU Wasn't the first to have gay relationships, but as far as I can think of, they were the first to have a completely openly gay couple be a full main character who is recurring and a staple of the show. You might gets some winks and nods about main characters, or you might get one-off episodes that feature a gay couple, but to have a full on no apologies pair of lesbians be a mainstay of the cast and major favorite was definitely pretty new.

Idle Oath

In gravity falls Wendy is canonically bisexual, although not mentioned in show, Alex hirch confirmed she was, but was unable to explore lgbt themes due to disney interference

VJ Sins

To counter Hman, yes it is somewhat cartoon network being speratic and favoring things like Teen titns go, but its absolutely homophobia, there were many ultimatums that were imposed to Rebecca sugar to what she can and cant do and what she had to give up to do that, there are many posts by the crewniverse ( the su creators crew) that show stuff like where they have to tell execs "Noooo the gems arent all girls, this isnt gay, they are all just genderless rocks, nothing lgbt going on here" and similar. 2016 was wild and Steven universe was absolutely one of the main reasons we see more lgbt stuff in shows, this was an example that showed that even scutinized and being pushed to cancel, the show was successful despite it. So yeah

VJ Sins

Ruff is absolutely spitting truth at the end there. Cartoons before Steven Universe only ever snuck in queer rep through heavily implied subtext. You couldn't outright have gay characters in a kids show, and Steven opened that door for the shows that came after. It was fought every step of the way. Stevonnie was also hugely fought against by parents being canon intersex and non-binary.

Kemi Stanton

Prior to Steven Universe LGBT reprisentaion was barely a thing and if it was in anything it was a series finally thing, since they were ending anyways who cares if they snuck it in

Des

I thought so. I hope they don't completely miss them

Maka

4*

Brandon

The reason that Steven universe’s release date was so bad is because of the old Cartoon Network executive putting teen titans go on 24/7 and releasing “Steven bombs” which were 7 back to back new episodes throughout the week (one even lasted an entire 4 weeks of new episodes) to maximize viewerships since Teen titans go was the most popular show at the time for kids. Just bad scheduling for profit sadly

Brandon

There are 3 more left for season 2 you’re not wrong. It ends with Log date 7 15 2

Brandon

I could have sworn there were more episodes in this season. Guess not

Maka

There's one cartoon that had an inkling of a gay relationship in 2014, which I would argue was the first step towards greater representation in cartoons. But I won't say which is because it would be a spoiler for another show.

Christian Asch

you're not the only one, I'm extatic

The gravity community

so technically the next 4 are the actual "end" of Season 2 officially, which is why it seemed to kinda end weirdly. The next 6 Episodes are going to be Insane tho

Artemys Jones

Oh nice you guys did up to The Answer

Kayla Ryan

Season 2 ends with Log Date 7152

mARvOEoUS

im not sure what site you guys use, but its wrong, this isnt the finale, you have 4 more season 2 episodes, the site just lists them as season 3

Kristian

yeah, so while this is the season finale on Hulu, "the answer" isnt the actual finale of season 2. Hulu just likes cutting seasons off for some reason. luckily i dont think Hulu changed the order of anything so its fine.

Sincerely, the Best.

OHHHH we get a long one! It's not exactly the finale for S2 (Log Date 7152 is the S2 finale) but still - What a treat!!

Kemi Stanton

seasons 2-4 have 25 episodes each. this season ends on the episode "Log Date 7 15 2"

Eric

Pearl performs a Super Inazuma Kick from Gunbuster on Peridot during their fight and is also a reference to the "Rider Kick" finisher from the Kamen Rider tokusatsu series.

Springtime Bonnie

Can't wait for them to react to "that" moment next week.
