Iroh is just connected to the spirits because he’s a human that went to the spirit world. That’s the explanation for everything involving him and spirits

Brye Baker

the rope showing zuko escaped and they all said "THE GOOD ROPE" lmaooooo

IansPoorChoices

I am sure others have explained it but yes, Aang still needs to work on waterbending. As of right now, he has no control over himself when he goes into the avatar state. When yall saw him face the fish, he went into the avatar state and the ocean spirit basically used his power, possessing Aang. Aang has pretty much all the power of all the avatars in him all the time but that doesn't mean he has any control over it yet.

Laura D

Also, I’m sure people have mentioned this in the comments but to clear things up one yes that’s the end of Zhao two that wasn’t technically Aang doing any of that damage. It was the ocean spirit using his body as a vessel for revenge and three Yue is now officially the moon spirit.

JRax 17

Let’s just say people call this book the worst of the main three because a certain character wasn’t introduced until the very last second of it lol

JRax 17

One of the craziest things is that Yue’s death is actually foreshadowed in the previous episode. When her father, the chief is announcing that some people will not return from the battle, Yue’s face is the first one that we are shown.

Pixie

The "willy-wonka" door is based on asian culture. I know it from japanese culture. sacred spaces such as tea houses would have short doors that you have to bend down to go through. it symbolizes how lords and peasants are all humbled before entering the space. Zhao said between the previous two episodes that many years ago he found a hidden library in the earth kingdom that had a scroll. That is how Zhao found out the mortal identity of the ocean and moon spirits. The scroll also had their location. Other people have already explained the merging of the ocean spirit and the avatar state.

Alice Lapin

I've rewatched this show dozens of times and have never caught this! Wow, thank you!

Molly Moleres

Same here, I'm really excited

Ben Asay

All good. I only remembered specifically when the avatar state is explained cause I recently binged roshi’s reaction to the series

Roronoa Zoro

the next book is gonna be insane

just_jojo

No spoilers for Korra, but damn did he get what he deserved

Zach

Remember iroh saw the dragon Aang was riding the first time he entered the spirit world

Zach

Can't wait for you guys to see book 2: Earth!

MajestNick

Aang is a literal Avatar for spirits. When the ocean saw the moon die and went “where my Glock at” it picked up Aang and said “let’s go pop some fireworks.” That’s why the fish form thing could only “push” water. It is the “push” while the moon is the “pull”. Also why when the moon came back it grabbed Zhao like “where you goin?” before heading on back.

MMdock

Leaves on the wine...

VJ Sins

The blue monster wasnt just Aang, it was his Avatar State fuzed with the spiritual energy of the Ocean Spirit, he still hasnt mastered Waterbending, but the spirit gave him a powerup

VJ Sins

I'm ready for the tears to flow.

Reaper Scythe

The panda was from the 1st spirit world episode when we 1st saw roku, the big monster that was destroying an innocent village because the fire nation destroyed its forest

VJ Sins

I love their reaction so much. I can not wait til they see book 2. I know they will love it. It so worth being a patreon and watch along side these guys. So fun.

So, yeah, the Ocean Spirit (the black koi fish) was *not* happy Zhao killed its friend, the Moon Spirit. It channeled its power through Aang and took revenge on the Fire Nation and Zhao. That's why Aang was able to turn into that giant koi fish.

Gestrid

I LOVE that they caught Yue's eyes too - the obvious stuff they missed about the avatar state and the ocean spitit is honestly no big deal to miss because the show is going to expand on what the avatar state is and how it works, and they'll see it in action again plenty more times but the stuff they catch right away is stuff that comes and goes away so fast it mostly goes over people's heads the first time. And the character stuff they're catching onto is really the core of the show, that's what really matters here. I love it!

Kemi Stanton

I legit do love how you guys will pick up on tiny little details, like Yue's eyes still having color, and so many character nuances, calling so many things that will happen just because it makes sense for that to be what a character would do. While also missing things the story just says outright or isn't trying to be sneaky about just because you are so focused on the smaller details. Amazing reactions, and strap in, things only get more insane from here, yeah Season 1 is pretty much agreed on to be the lowest ranked of the seasons, but only because 2 and 3 are simply that damn good! Though I do think 2 is overall stronger, while 3 has some better high points, but isn't as consistently amazing.

Seraphem

For the record, Koh is more of a face yoinker than a face snatcher

Zach

so pumped for yall to start book 2

Romang

Book 1 isn't bad, but the other books for Avatar the Last Airbender Far outclass Book 1!

Prof. Walker

my bad, didnt remember it explicitly being explained again. Thought it was just common knowledge since we've all seen it and kind of gotten it explained already

FedeZ7

I always thought this was because Iroh always seemed in tune with the spirits but it was in this episode or the previous one that they mention he actually went to the spirit world

Josh avarada

This is the only show I've ever seen that actually ramps and delivers story in the way one piece does. Explosively and Always.

Nicholas Vancil

"Can we get more information on [Iroh's son]?" Anyone else hear Kalimba music suddenly kick in?

DementisXYZ

Aang isn't necessarily the powerhouse here. It's more so he's a conduit to the spirits and his past lives. He was merely the vessel for the water spirit to inhibit.

Kael Thomas

When Aang used Waterbending to push the Fire Nation back, he was channeling the Ocean spirit. The two Koi fish were the Ocean and the Moon (both water bending spirits), the white one was the Moon and the Black one the Ocean. So when the Moon disappeared, you could see the black Koi freaking out in the water. Aang channeled the spirit to fight the Fire Navy because the Ocean spirit was angry. Aang's power there was similar to when he channeled Roku at the Fire Sage temple. He was more of a conduit for the spirit (as he is the bridge between the Spirit and physical world) than actually him mastering water bending in that moment. Love your guys's reactions! I can't wait for season 2!

Molly Moleres

That water monster was the personification of the rage of the ocean spirit. Aang didn’t create it. But the spirit did by using aang as a catalyst

Roronoa Zoro

That’s explained in episode 1 of the next season. No reason to spoil it now

Roronoa Zoro

That was Aang fused w the ocean spirit

Ahan Shankwalkar

aang turning into that thing was avatar spirit and the ocean spirit having revenge together

stonkn't

it even keeps getting better and better and even BETTER so, kalm ur titties guys!!!

stonkn't

now that you guys are done with season one you can watch the last airbender movie it's really good (no one tell them)

pepper

I've seen like 3 dozen reactions to this show and you guys are my favourite so far. It feels like I'm in 2006 watching it with my friends again 🔥

Cyan

Drowning him, as far as we know.

BeerFan

Yeah, it's not like this season wasn't interesting or something, it's just that the next two seasons are more interesting with a lot more to come.

Blitz Cam

Don't overthink it. Iroh likely just followed Zhao to the sanctuary.

rrrebo

- edited for potential spoiler i guess -

FedeZ7

I wanna take a moment to appreciate how much more time and effort you guys are putting into the Nani No Anime reactions on top of everything else yall do. Thank you guys!!

Os

SO EPIC If you thought Book 1 is great, wait till you start Book 2: Earth. This series gets better every season till the end!

Helily

i just gotta say, that george takei is playing the face stealer in the live action—- and i am Ready to be traumatized again. can you imagine watching that as a child?

pollyy clunes

It's a rough L for Sokka

Alyssa Hernandez

Nah Boom we're not going to roast you for saying Zuko's not that bad of a guy, that he's a product of his environment. The whole point of this show is that NOTHING is black and white. There is no person or situation that is wholly good or evil.

Brjete

All of the seasons are great, but season 1 is definitely the most tame, like in most shows. I am so hyped for everything after you get to Season 2 episode 6! That is the episode that really sold me. And I cannot wait for you to get there. But everything leading up to that is incredible as well.

Honey

That form that Aang took was because he assimilated or fused with the ocean spirit (the black koi fish). It isn't spoken its just implied by the fact that the form looks like a koi fish, the pond was empty before and during when the Moon fish was returned, and that it was still "alive" after it dumped Aang on the wall.

MuiG4Tariq

Okay so some explanation, I saw a lot of people explain the whole thing with the koi fish and what it means to bend the water. But, the reason why air and earth don't get a boost like water and fire is because their elements are always in existence. The heat of fire is felt the most during the sun is out, hence why they say that "fire benders rise with the sun". And water benders are strongest at night because that is when the pull from the moon is clearly seen and the strongest. Both can still use their elements but it's not quite to full power. It's like having a half dead battery in a device, it still works but not super great. Then as soon as you put in all new battery it's able to do everything the way it should. Hope that clears some things up!

Harley Taylor

Just to clarify: The 2 fish were the ocean and moon spirits, when the moon spirit was killed the spirit of the ocean helped Aang fight back so he cant do that giant fish monster thing again unless he has the ocean spirit help again.

Ricky Faber

You guys picked up on a detail nobody really ever does. In fact, you've been doing it a lot this season. Notably, Yue having color while everyone else was washed out, and a few other minor things. ATLA has a lot of these tiny details and callbacks, so keep an eye on recurring characters even in the background. Also, while Aang has done all of these things with Water, notice the glow. That's a sign that it's his entire ancestry of Avatars treating Aang like a Gundam and giving him their power. He's okay to do it, but being able to waterbend all on his own is the goal. Doing badass (but not spirit-monster level) moves without glowing. Another big detail: KoiAang never pulls water. He is fusing with the ocean spirit at the time and can only push. When Tui comes back to life because of Yue, La drops Aang off, drowns Zhao, and goes back home. Also it's sort of interesting. Watch Katara. She likes to copy moves Aang shows off. You guys were talking about nobody uses Waterbending like KoiAang did

Thine Tiny Equine

When Aang is glowing he's entered the Avatar State. This means that he is accessing the knowledge from previous avatars, which is why he is a master bender when glowing but then still needs to learn the different elements o his own. So despite kicking ass this episode Aang has not yet mastered water bending. Additionally, as others have mentioned, the ocean spirit combined with Aang/the avatar to take revenge for the moon spirit's death so he was even more super charged than normal. Also, while it's not really explained why Iroh knew Yue had some of the moon spirit's life within her, I like to think it's because Iroh is more spiritually attuned than most (some proof of this is the fact that Zhao stated Iroh has been to the spirit world before). This could also be why Iroh knew where the moon and ocean spirts were, though he could have also just followed Zhao there.

Brjete

And my impression is that you are correct, in general season 2 and 3 are even more beloved, although I feel people are split which of those 2 is better for them. I maybe prefer 2 but 3 certainly ends the show overall amazing. In the end it's mostly just 3 great seasons that tie together pretty perfectly.

Kerstin

Tui and La are push and pull. They aren't sun and moon, they're moon and ocean. They control the tides. Princess Yue said the moon was the first water bender. You guys had it right the first time.

Sydney Horton

Something interesting with the spirits: as explained in the spirit world part, the ocean is the pushing force and the moon the pulling one, both together creating a balance. When we see Aang "fuse" with the angry ocean spirit while the moon is gone all of his bending we see is a pushing motion, he isn't "pulling" any water as we often see in the more fluid waterbending normally.

Kerstin

Don't you guys remember Hei Bai the Panda? He was in the first Winter Solstice episode and kidnapped Sokka. And remember in that episode, Iroh was the only one able to see Roku's Spirit guide Dragon when it was taking Aang to and from the Fire Temple.

Sydney Horton

Holy shit I forgot zuko tried to save Zhao.

TrixieTurner

The ocean spirit used Aang as a conduit to exact revenge. Then once it saw the moon return, he set Aang down and went after Zhao, taking him into the spirit world.

Sydney Horton

In which we are terrified as fuck by Koh, and meet Koizilla.

rrrebo

Yeah this is the worst Avatar season imo. Barely a 9/10 😂

Deiondre0

People get this confused a lot. The Ocean spirit, the other fish, essentially hijacked Aang’s body and combined their powers. The Ocean Spirit went on the rampage while Aang was a vessel. That’s why once the moon came back the spirit left Aang and proceeded to grab Zhao for revenge.

Andre Ransom

The fish Kaiju was a combination of Aang being in the avatar state, and actually fusing with the ocean spirit (note the meaningful eye contact made with the black fish beforehand). That's why, even after Aang was expelled from it, it still went after Zhao. The ocean spirit was avenging the moon.
