I think you learn a bit more about the tribes as the show goes on, so I won't spoil anything, but if you do go back and watch the earlier episodes, I think it's important to note that Sokka does start the show with a pretty sexist attitude (remember the Kyoshi Island episode!). It isn't as noticeable in the Southern Tribe as the North obviously, but I think it is an interesting part of their culture to note. I've always seen Pakku as more upholding his culture to a fault, which you guys obviously pointed out. I really like that they addressed this part of Water Tribe culture

2023-03-08 03:51:23 +0000 UTC@1:49 “The map of this world is crazy!” Despite how obvious it may seem (like the opening pages in a fantasy novel), many people do miss that the map drawn up is an accurate depiction of the world. You can quite literally trace where our heroes have journeyed from the Southern Water Tribe, to the Southern Air Temple, to Kyoshi Island, through the Earth Kingdom territories, and the island of the Roku’s temple. When we stopped in Omashu, one of you theorized that the Earth Kingdom could be doing so well because they make shady deals with the Fire Nation. It is important to note that as seen on the map, the Earth Kingdom is HUGE, there are many Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom, but it is not an easy nation to entirely taken over, in part, due to its sheer size (I think at least).

2023-03-07 22:33:38 +0000 UTCSo back in the first air temple they went to, Aang’s temple, while it isn’t overly damaged there are signs of Fire Nation soldiers equipment littered around, a few burn marks were shown, and Aang literally found Monk Gyatso’s skeleton in one room. So they did fight at the temples. I just think they didn’t put much thought into how damaged the temples should look after the fighting.

Fire Nation is small compared to the Earth Kingdom (their main rival) and in an extended war the side with more resources always comes out on top.
