The Arc so far is mostly only really important for pacing. It's a nice introduction of Aokiji, and him helping Tonjit are a better payoff then him helping the random people in the Anime. Also more Robin/crew bonding, etc. There is one big fan theory though, that I really like, that there will be another Davy Back Fight later in the series, so having it be introduced this early helps with that. And who might be the opponent? Well, who is technically still on the list of people Luffy has to surpass, while not really having a reason to be hostile about it? And what could be the symbolic prize of their duel?

2022-12-16 06:28:22 +0000 UTCThe anime (who changes much more to the worse than only prolonging this arc) bans Aokiji on another island after seven filler episodes that have nothing to do with the original story so you have to think he belongs to the Water 7 arc. And one of the original good ideas of the arc is to show the most stupid and most deadly way to lose a crew member which works ways better with Aokiji than with the Davy Back Fight even in the manga. The arc is also there to show Robin even more how the straw hats react to such situations and how valueable it is to be their crew member – which informs her decision in Water 7. It also changes some crew dynamics as you realized with Usopp. The story needed a breather between two intense arcs too (in the anime G8 was already successful doing this).
