Lucia and references!!

The flashback you are reading is set in Sicily in 1880.

Lucia is one of William's siblings and in this memory she is 12 years old. The story of Bon bon is set in 1895, so 15 years have passed. Now Lucia is 27 years old, so you can fall in love with her haha! And soon I'll show you how she is now, for her character bios!

But don't get confused, it's not that it's been 15 years since William hasn't seen his siblings since that day... no, it's just the year in which this very important memory takes place, which will determine many things in the future. William has been away from his family for a few years, not so much.

Lucia's dress was made after days and days of collecting Sicilian clothes from the end of the 19th centur ( look how many, I share them with you!) they were very colorful, the children wore less picturesque clothes, but when the girls become adults they love to dress in their traditional costume, especially on holidays, also today :) they are still traditional costumes!

A play set in Sicily is Cavalleria Rusticana, composed in 1889, by Pietro Mascagni. Obviously it is a dramatic story.

What you will have understood from me, as an author, is that I try not to invent anything, and to tell you things I know and of which I have culture, things I have seen with my own eyes, or things that are part of my life and my traditions .

Here is an important food for thought for those who draw comics.

Why can't we westerners do Japanese manga well?

For this reason: because they are Japanese :) and therefore they put their culture, their traditions, the things they know and have seen and experienced in the comics.

If I wanted to try to make a manga, I wouldn't be able to, because it's not enough for me to have read many mangas or been to Japan. It would be copying other people's life and culture, and even if you did it right, it would never measure up and there would always be something missing.

In Bon Bon, on the other hand, you are sure that what I tell you is always based on things that I, personally, know and are part of my culture.

And I hope this arouses your interest and curiosity, and that you like the result, exactly as I like the products of other countries and cultures, which I don't know :)

Ah yes, Lucia is present starting from page 60 that not everyone can see yet, cuz is the Gold reward, but don't worry, it's half colored already, so you will see it soon everyone! :)

Ah yes, true. They do take quite some liberties in order to make it marketable for their American audience :P

I love the old school art style! But more than style I was referring to real stories, slice of life, drawing on the culture and history of the past, you can only know that if you have studied your school books and since you were a child you have seen films and shows on those stories. Like I who have seen Italian films (in Italian) set in all eras and studied theater, all of our operas, and my grandparents told me the history of Italy and I studied it at school. And then I traveled to Europe and I also studied the history of Europe. If I had been born in Japan I would have studied feudal Japan, their wars, their myths and legends. And very little of the history of Italy :) in fact the Japanese don't know very well how to live in Italy, they have a very exotic vision and when they come they have several culture shocks XD but when I saw the anime Thermae Romae I said myself " The author was good, the basics are correct even if she then invented the rest", and in fact the author has lived in Italy and studied the history of ancient Rome a LOT :D

I'm not Sicilian, I'm Roman but I have Sicilian relatives and friends :) Yes, if you want to parody or invent from scratch by inspiring yourself, that's fine but there are gaps exactly as you said that must be filled with acceptable things :) Lately Guillermo Del Toro made a movie about Pinocchio, for Netflix, it's his version and he invented it from scratch because it doesn't reflect Collodi's original story, but it's his VISION, and I appreciate it much more than Disney's Pinocchio ( the last live action) where the original elements are wrong but pretend to be right. For example, assuming it's set in Italy, Disney's Pinocchio is dressed as a Tyrolean, and Geppetto's shop sign is written in English...that's why geppetto was poor, because Italians couldn't read his sign and therefore didn't have customers XD ahah !

Ah, so you must be Sicilian then :) An older sister was it. My guess was that it was his mother, but close enough :P So Willian is from Sicily. Just want kind of family does he have? It's almost 20 years after unification, so surely he can't be from the old Bourbon dynasty. It is the start of the "Major Immigration Years" however. Is his family in the mafia? As for not trying to invent anything: while people should indeed try and write what they know, there are gaps sometimes. Be it Science fiction, fantasy, the middle ages, or what have you, sometimes you have to make an educated guess. You yourself have gathered a bunch of reference materials in order to make her dress more believable. So I think a westerner could write a good manga for example, although perhaps not a good manga about life of a Japanese in Japan. I do know about parody mangas made by a westerner, that are primarly about making jokes about manga tropes in a manga format :)

Lucia looks very pretty for her age. ^w^ Now I'm curious.....how she looks being 27. O//////O Also thank you for the backstory of how these ideas (from costumes, to sceneries, to other misc. stuff) come to be. :D That's why I enjoy reading BonBon is you injecting your own culture and experiences to a fictional world/universe where people want to be in. ^o^

Kanbe Namura

I think that Ben Dunn has a good grasp of old-school manga artwork styles.

He's afraid of the volcano, but he doesn't know yet that it's all smoke and no fire XD
