I had not thought of them as panties until you mentioned it. O: But, now I see how they can look like panties. I really like "boy shorts", a fun and sexy style of lingerie that is often frilly or lace, and hugs the booty like very, very small shorts. There are also styles of shorts that are very small, usually pajama shorts. Mary's shorts reminded me of those. ;3
