I am cuorious about your impressions!

Time ago I wrote this post where I talked about my taste in anthropomorphic characters style. I talked just about the Sonic universe since I've done a fan art project inspired by this https://www.patreon.com/posts/second-version-24603233

I really enjoy the unrealistic aspect of the character of Sonic Universe so ... uhm... I think at the first sight I don't like really much this style guide released for Sonic movie https://s3.amazonaws.com/prod-media.gameinformer.com/styles/body_default/s3/2019/03/04/4ca106c6/sonicmovie2.jpg

but I want to know your impression.

I do not really love the hairy effect and where are his gloves? The white gloves are the characteristic of Sonic as well as Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny! ( and it seems to have 4 fingers instead of 5 )

Speaking of it I remember that it was not necessary to make the Looney Tunes realistic to love the movie Space Jam. Of course it was an archaic animation, like "Who framed Roger Rabbit", but today they could use the CG to make Sonic as what it is.

I'll give you an example. I did not like the 2011 Smurf movie because I could not look at wrinkles, pores, eyelashes, fingernails, flimsy and floppy clothes... ugh... I don't like to see a realistic Smurf, it was creepy for me...

Then I saw the last movie of 2017 where the Smurfs are in CG but they are true Smurf! So cute and funny expressions, with they real eyes and proportions, smooth skin, soft lines. I like it really much.

But see, 2011 movie was really much pubblicized and had big impact because was the first movie of Smurfs, on the contrary the last movie was not so popular (at least in Italy).

As for me I would done a Smurf movie like the second one since the beginnin, but I learned that in USA you prefer to make a live action with humans so you try to make the most realistic anthropomorphic characters as possible, like Scooby Doo, to create a feeling with the actors.

I am of old school if I say that I still like Space Jam solution LOL, but I am also open to CG, although I would like a compromise with very cartoon characters like Sonic ( I would like that he has gloves at least...) .

I do not know if I will watch this movie, but I confess that the 2014 TMNT movie was fun and I liked it. Maybe because it came after so many reboots of TMNT, and I was satisfied with the first film ever I saw in 1990! LOL I was so young! I know it is outdated but It was just as I wanted as a child! XD ( same sensation for Batman movie in 1989 )

But this is the first movie of Sonic so... I don't know. I am still undecided.

let me know your impressions and if I should be less skeptical :P

I like to read your comments while I am working :)

First of all, I laughed so much seeing the video! XD OMG ahahah! I agree with Detective Pikachu! :) Anyone can imagine Pikachu like that! :) But it is different from Sonic because it is an unrealistic character so if they did a live action with real people and Sonic "smooth" came out of a video game would still be fun, I remember when I saw this Halloween episode of the Simpsons I exclaimed SO COOL !!!! https://exploregram.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Homer-in-the-real-world-from-Treehouse-of-Horror-VI-Homer-Cubed.-Season-7-Episode-6.jpg Do you remember it? XD

Same for me, I miss 2D animation, I miss so much something like Fievel Goes West. Or it could be the opportunity to create a live action with Sonic coming out of a video game and arrives in the world of humans (like the plot of Sonic X and similarly to Space Jam then) made in a good CG video game style, like as that in Wreck it Ralph! It would have been great! ( first seconds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYQqIKFtFjE ) With real humans, why not?

So.....Here my thoughts: I wouldn't mind sonic in 2D form for a live action movie (Like "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" & "Space Jam"). :) Hell I'd say his 3D form in the Sonic Boom cartoon wouldn't be bad for a live action film. ^_^; However this....Oh my god. XD You're right Vanessa. It's the fact that he has no gloves, and he has realistic fur that makes him so....weird. lol Now the Detective Pikachu movie is fine (for me) with them having the realistic fur, because Pokemon are creatures that I think most people can see in real life. :o Sonic....I don't think anyone can believe he could exist in our world. @_@ Which makes his design look ridiculous, just like the Smurfs (2011 version) & the live action Scooby-doo movies. xD Who knows, maybe the story is so good that it distracts us from the design of CGI Sonic. :) For now....every time I see that design of sonic, I'll be thinking about this flash cartoon. I was never really into Sonic the Hedgehog so i'm not too bothered by this movie. But what does bother me about most movies today, especially the animated ones, these big companies are leaning too much on CG animation, more so than 2D animation. It's a real shame too, cause i grew up watching movies like "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Space Jam" I loved the 2D animation/live action techniques they implemented. It was awesome. But now a days, They've allowed themselves to get lazy and resort to CG, just so they can rush these things out in a timely way, completely abandoning passion and heart for the sake of the almighty dollar. It's just sad.

Quite right!

It's bad, but not THAT bad, imho.

Pikachu is ok because his body is the same :D You can imagine it like that :) But you are right, I can't imagine the legs like that. Also because they changed his shoes, now are running shoes, his feet are small. With bigger shoes, perhaps his legs would have been more proportionate in my opinion.

Vanessa San

Yes the gloves are essential for me , aside that they are characteristic of the character, because all my art teachers always told me an hint : do the hands a litte bigger when you are afraid to wrong the body proportions because hands bigger gives better balance. And I do that often. So...this is the total opposite since they shrinked his hands so much...and without gloves. Yes I liked Zootopia. Thank you for found me ! I am really glad that you like my work :)

Vanessa San

It's just the poster featuring his legs that urked me. Until we actual trailer, we will never know. But then again the Detective Pikachu looks good.

First, I'd like to say how happy I am that I found you here on Patreon. I really liked your work on the comic, some years back. Second, I didn't like this model of Sonic, for some reason I didn't understand until you mentioned the gloves. It looks weird. But, it's a movie and the greatest asset of a movie, to me, is the story it's trying to tell, so we'll see. Though I certainly don't like the looks, like with the Smurfs (didn't like the story too, but...). I'm curious, though. Did you like Zootopia?
