Ema are tablets that hang in Shinto temples. The wishes that will be read by the kami (gods) are written on them, the wishes will be read by the gods and will be fulfilled by the end of the year... OMG!
Every year on the 15th of January, during the Shinto ceremony called Otakiage (お 焚 き 上 げ), they are burned to make room for the wishes of the new year.
Therefore, the ema have an expiration date of about one year, after which they are destroyed together with the omikuji.
Anyone can read the wishes written on the wooden boards, and photograph them freely.
I have not been able to photograph too many Ema because it rained heavily, infact you can see some wet and some have faded because the rain has melted ink and colors... :( I had to hold my umbrella but you''ll find some examples in this post.
So...can you guess what I did the next day? ;)
See you in the next post.
