Everyone sees her as a clown still, I don't think anyone grew sympathetic to her after her backstory. You are spot on that she created her own problems and now takes it out on others. If anything I feel like her backstory is supposed to highlight that she is mentally unstable and is a wildcard that can go off at any moment for the smallest things.

Its pretty normal for kids to want recognition, even more so with parents constantly comparing you. Her trying to be nice to everyone and have everyone be friends is fine in itself. What broke her though is keeping all the secrets. Imagine two of your best friends, the one betrays the other. You dont tell the secret because you dont want to betray them, at the same time it eats away at you because you are harming the other by keeping it secret. Now back to her, she as a kid, keeping those kinds of secrets of 20-30 other kids, its understandable she had to vent or she would just melt down. And when everyone went at her she had to fight back. Especially since kids can be cruel. It was probaly at that moment when she lost everthing she got a taste of how much power the truth holds that she turned out that kind of person. Still doesnt justify what she become, but atleast the show has a person the viewers can hate i guess. While other classes are enemies, they are also just students trying to get to A. Kushida might just last till the finals of the last year and be the final villain
