I was wrong. He can get blessings he wants but the sword one was random. I am sorry for the misinformation. Edit. I was right the first time and was not random. Reinhard did ask for the sword blessing apparently? Author just answered in a radio show about the latest episode. I guess it was not misinformation.

He pulled out his sword finally. Also, if I remember correctly, Reinhard has the ability to choose to obtain blessings, so he did choose to take Theresia's sword blessing. So that is why they blame him for his grandmother's death. This was not explained in the anime but told in the novel. He took her blessing by asking for it and took it from his grandmother at the worst time. This made him have a fear of accidently taking other's blessings now.
