(Early Access) ATLA Episode 6!

No ads yet. Should be getting the final 2 up pretty quickly as well. HTTYD 3 will be this week too. We were supposed to have finished ATLA and HTTYD3 last week, but had some family stuff throw a wrench in our timing. I hope you all enjoy!

(Early Access) ATLA Episode 6!

So far I'm still on board 7 of 10 maybe 8 of 10 at certain moments. If I was the director I'd have shortened the Aang Zuko chat a bit and made a bigger fuss over Aang returning the totem to Koh. Showing that Aang can find a different way of solving problems that how his past lives would have done so. Yeah I'm liking the balancing act that the show has gone through to convert a animated show to live action.

This is one of the better episodes in my opinion due to the original creators having a hand in the writing for this episode. It does have its flaws some due to the previous episode with Koh and the unnecessary dialogue between Aang and Zuko which left me annoyed but 70% of it was good. I enjoyed the changed that Zuko crew was the crew he spoke up for. But the blending of S1 and S2 stuff is ughhh.

"I know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards" - The absolute buffoons who wrote this show. Yeah they're not 100% accurate to the source material, but they said before release that it was going to be a "remix" - I can get over it. Yeah the CGI can be a bit rough at times, but they don't have an infinite budget - I can get over it. Yeah the acting is a little stiff sometimes, but they're kids - I can get over it. What I CANNOT get over though, is the absolutely terrible writing on display here. This episode is a prime example, mainly the scenes between Aang and Zuko after they escaped. In the animated show, it's a quick, 30 second scene where Aang tells Zuko about a fire nation friend he had, and wonders if they could have been friends. Zuko remains quiet and attacks as soon as Aang finishes talking, upon which Aang runs away. As Zuko watches Aang disappear, his angry facial expression softens - he's clearly reflecting on what Aang just told him. It's a fantastic scene that perfectly encapsulates the characters at that point in time - Aang's relentless optimism and willingness to reach out, versus Zuko being conflicted and resorting to it with his default response - angrily lashing out. In the live action version, it's a five minute long conversation between the two where LITERALLY EVERYTHING is being spelled out. No subtext, no subtlety, nothing. SHOW US! DON'T JUST TELL US! It's like they don't trust the viewers to understand what's happening. It's honestly embarassing that this show (which targets a more adult audience) has less confidence in their viewers than a show for kids that aired on Nickelodeon. And then AFTER that they try to do a 1:1 recreation of the animated series, but it loses all its punch because of the previous scene. I want to print out the script of the original animated series, roll it up, fly to Hollywood and smack whoever wrote this over the head with it.

This is my favorite of the episodes. I'm a HUGE ATLA fan and I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the changes in the show overall, but I think that this episode balances the new way of approaching similar plot points with doing the animated show justice and I love the addition of the 41st's plotline.

I find after each episode I watch that I really enjoy the relationship between zuko and iroh in this live action, probably one of my favorite things about this show.... I also agree that Aang not learning water bending yet is annoying and how they haven't included it so far is surprising.... can't wait for the next reaction!
