The Iron Giant is one of my favorite movies! I love how it tackles the tale of autonomy, grief, and responsibility. I became aware of this next fact some years later, but Brad Bird worked on this film (which is an adaptation of The Iron Man by Ted Hughes) as a memorial for sister's death as a result of gun violence with his pitch being: "What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?". Bird chose this particular literature because it was written by Hughes for his kids to help them cope with the death of their mother.
