2023-05-13 16:02:31 +0000 UTCHere we go!!! People will tell you M:I-2 is the black sheep of this franchise, and, well, they're right. But I think they're all great watches, and I find the whole concept of this franchise from a production standpoint to be pretty interesting. After the success of the first one, Tom Cruise (in his producer role) was just choosing directors whose work he liked, and basically gave them free reign to do whatever they wanted and flex their action muscles. So while the 2nd might be the weakest from a storytelling standpoint, no one can deny it is a PURE big-budget John Woo extravaganza. Just as #3 is pure J.J. Abrams and #4 is pure Brad Bird. He really let each director put their own distinct stamp on the movies. After that, Cruise seemed to have found his one true creative soulmate in writer/director Chris McQuarrie and has stuck with him for the rest of the franchise, which is a great choice, as the last two McQ made were pretty much action movie perfection, and he & Cruise constantly find bold (read: insane) new ways to one-up themselves in the stunt/set-piece department. The stunts Cruise does in the later movies are truly unprecedented. As a result, after the minor slump that is the 2nd, these flicks truly just get better as they go along, making it arguably the best Hollywood blockbuster action franchise in existence, imo.

2023-05-13 06:01:47 +0000 UTC2 had a troubled production - at one point they brought in Star Trek writers Brannon Braga and Ronald D. Moore to take a pass at the script. I think ultimately John Woo’s style is pretty idiosyncratic to his films and don’t necessarily fit with an action spy thriller. That being said, there’s a couple of fantastic action setpieces in this film so even though it’s really unlike the other films, it has its own kind of charm
