I agree with most of the points, and I'm ok with a old decrepit Luke, if we had gotten to see the movie explaining how he got the way he did. But they treated him so poorly and clearly didn't listen to Hamill. That's why the Mandalorian is saving the universe for me.

I love this movie xD Its got its niggles and scenes or sequences I'm not a fan of but I love how brave and fresh it felt. I loved having my expectations subverted. Fan service is great and has the "feel goods" [and we all know how leaning too far into that/being reactionary can be *cough Rise of Skywalker* ] but I really want to see SW push into new/undiscovered territory and I think that specific theme that this movie was pushing was super interesting. I for one love Luke's story. It makes him so tragically real [not "tragically" in the "its terrible" sense but in the literary sense!]. It makes his character FAR more interesting to me. Much more interesting than sating a childhood desire to see him go all "action hero." And not that I hated that in The Mandalorian! It was great. And suited Luke in that point of his life. But he was somewhere else. Maybe if more time was spent having us live in those moments that broke Luke we'd better understand and be more accepting of the change [since it IS rather abrupt], but yeah. Easily my favorite of the sequel trilogy.

I also think that people had a problem with the lack of time jump from episode 7 to this one. It's maybe a few hours or so apart. I remember people having a huge problem with Rey knowing nothing about the force until the last 3rd of episode 7. Then hours/days later in The Last Jedi she's showing she can battle Luke with sticks in the rain pretty fairly. And at the end she's able to lift huge boulders and rocks from the cave on Crait, whereas Luke had trouble keeping up 4 small rocks on Dagobah in Empire (which was the beginning of his training too).

So glad you included so much of the movie discussion because this movie really does come with all that attached to it. Really enjoyed Jens perspective as a first time watcher and I want to see what you both have to say about the last one. For me, the last one is by far my least favorite lol

I think Holden you both made some great points. I’m pretty much in 100% agreement with you man 6.5 rating for me. I think Jen will definitely like the 9th film. Hush hush Holden I am slightly hyping up the last part. My prediction rating Jen will have for this last movie is 8.9-9.5

I simply can't enjoy this movie after everything that it does. The way Luke's character is taken, I can understand how that is relatable to people, but it is not Luke's character. Luke refused to believe his father was evil despite the fact Vader had tortured his friends, cut his hand off, killed Obiwan and was seen as the galaxy's demon. Luke saw the Vader had done these terrible things and said 'no you can be saved'. Kylo simply had dreams that were influenced by the dark side and Luke went 'well you gotta die now'. This makes zero sense. The Leia space stuff I don't have a huge probelm with because it's kinda cool, we see Kanen do something similiar in rebels, but the way hers happening just fundamentally seems really stupid. The Finn, Rose plot is utterly dumb because goes nowhere, Rose stopping Finn at the end is stupid too cause is doesn't do anything, Finn sacrificing himself would at least mean something, instead we gone a character that was completely underused and forgotten about. The hyperspace jump stuff is stupid especially since LIghtspeed travel has mostly been shown to take place in another dimension previously. There is some I like, Kylo breaking his helmet is a really good scene because he shouldn't be a copy of Vader. Rey's grey robes look cool, the Rey's parents stuff is also really good. What I don't like is how every single decision was reversed in the next movie by JJ just for the sake of it / out of spite. I also REALLY dislike the way Ryan handled the criticism on Twitter etc. No director should attack fans for being fans. I'm saying I hate Ryan entirely, I LOVE Knives Out. I am most mad at the leadership at Disney during this time. Overall my scores would be somthing like VII: 6.5/10 VIII: 3/10 IX: 2/10 Sorry for the LONG post but I thought this was the time talk talk about it. Interested for opinions on IX as it wasn't out in the original SW video. TLDR: I don't like this movie but I don't like the way it was handled inside IX and outside of the movies a lot more. At the end of the day, I have only watched the squeals a handful of times and have ZERO interest watching them again.

Very good point, I'm not sure how the dice worked. Even Kylo held them. I have no idea 🤷‍♂️

I respect your opinion holden about the Leia force fly scene. However., I personally feel like there was a better way to show she can use the force (for example the flashback scene in ep9) But in my theater when that scene happened my theater literally bursted out into laughter and that is not the response you want to have when you reveal something fans have been waiting decades to see. just my opinion. I feel like they should of at the very least had a scene earlier in the film that implies she can use the force but without making it super obvious so that when people would rewatch the movie they could see it and be like "oh they foreshadowed it all along." Also another criticism I hear people have about that scene is how was she able to breathe in space. You would die. This movie felt like just a series of gotcha moments that overstayed their welcome. One criticism I never had until now because holden brought it up is the dice that were force projections. How is Leia able to hold the force projected dice if force projected Luke isn't able to get hit by a lightsaber. It is Clear in Star Wars that force projections go through objects

I've never been more excited for a movie than for this one, and I won't be for a very long time. It has grown on me so much over the years. Especially everything with Snoke and on Crait, I rewatch that all the time, and I probably didn't listen to any movie soundtrack more than to The Last Jedi. It has a lot of parts though with underused potential though, for example, I like Rose as a character, but found Canto Bight pointless. Which, by the way, doesn't make the movie 47 minutes shorter like you said, not even close. It's like 20 minutes, there was a Reddit post last year with timestamps.

It’s ok for people who didn’t like the Luke stuff. Personally for myself, I loved it. It was really relatable to me as someone who suffers from depression. He as a character went through a lot. With only knowing his father for a few seconds and then failing with Ben Solo I can see why he’d become so down. I think the Luke we are in Mando and the Luke in TLJ are the same Luke at different times in his life. I loved both so so much. I think if he was just some badass that came to save the day it would have been too easy for all the characters, himself included. I appreciated the different take on that character.

I just watched the full video and I think Jen’s comment is actually very perceptive about The Last Jedi being more emotional. I think in modern franchise filmmaking so much of it centers almost entirely on narrative, everything seems to be about “how ______ fits into the narrative” and “how _____ will pay off later” and “what’s going to happen” in terms of narrative. When franchises do seem to even really makes calls to emotion they tend to rely on nostalgia or callbacks to earlier films. The Last Jedi is completely resistant to the way I think people consume modern franchise films and as a result probably why it turns people off. TLJ almost for nearly 2/3rds the film is basically just a character drama and one that keeps subverting your expectations. Most of the time when something evolves in these films, it’s the characters that evolve in predictable ways and the narrative that surprises, TLJ sort of does the complete opposite of that - so if you’re the type who’s already mapped out your fan theories and think you know what’s gonna happen, these subversions will probably ruffle your feathers. I think for me, I wanted so desperately after the prequels and TFA to just see something that took risks and felt new, and I don’t think all of them work (the Canto stuff) but I really respect Rian Johnson for taking those chances.

I’m glad to see the colour grading came out so well! I spent a lot of time staring at a vector scope getting those skin-tones even. Woo!

Im hoping so, but... you know... we'll see, lol

I hope the comments here can be civil - I know this is the most divisive film in the series. Critics loved it, a lot of fans seemed to hate it. I myself, am a huge fan, but I think after these 3 years since it came out, we all kinda understand each other’s viewpoints and can be respectful
