(Early Access) My friend watches Captain Marvel

I read somewhere about the comparison between this movie and Robocop. Hero suffers tragedy, loses memory, is used as weapon by bad guys, recovers humanity, wins the day. Definitely see the parallels. However, where this movie had missteps in that same comparison is with audience buy-in. In Robocop the audience knows Murphy. We see him as a family man and a good cop. Then we witness his brutal "murder" and reconstruction as Robocop. We are rooting for him to regain his humanity the whole time because we know it is there. With Carol we don't. The writers decided to opt for a "twist" by not letting us know who she was beforehand. Which is one of the reasons I think that standing up scene that Matt couldn't care less about fell flat. If we had been waiting the whole time for Carol to rise up and burn off her metaphorical shackles instead of just learning about them a minute before she shattered them, then this entire movie would have had a far better pay-off. That's my thoughts anyway. I am a big fan of Carol Danvers in the comics and was very excited for this movie when it came out. Sadly, I thought the movie was only mediocre, due in large part to the reasons I stated above. Unfortunately, Carol has been shunted around by Marvel very often with them seemingly not sure what to do with her. I loved her under Chris Claremont as Binary, loved her personal struggles after M-Day and really enjoyed the Kelly Sue DeConnick run as well as her brief stint as the "straight man" comedic stuff while she was running S.W.O.R.D. But, again it seems even in the movies Marvel is unsure what to do with the character as a whole.

I feel like I’m gonna enjoy a captain marvel sequel way more than this one. They had to put a lot of stuff in this movie and a lot of familiar themes that took away from the story in my opinion, but I get it. Excited to see what they do with that character.

My dislike for this movie comes from the "preachyness" of it all. It represents everything Black Panther avoided. One is AMAZING. The other is standard, hollier than thou, Hollywood writing.

I disliked this movie for the opposite reasons. I was very much against the Brie Larson hate and wanted the movie to be great to shut up the manbabies. When it was only meh, I was super disappointed. I felt Marvel had let us down. On rewatch, it's an OK movie. Certainly not great, but also not nearly as bad as my initial impression.

Great reaction! And I agree, separate the movie and actor/actress. I personally don't disagree with what she said, but her delivery could have been better. Although, I don't know enough about critics anyway to know if it is diverse or not, but after living overseas for several years, I have come to appreciate different viewpoints and ideas more.

This is a perfect example of a basic Marvel origin story for me. It’s very average but I love it regardless.

Like Matt said, I can totally separate feelings for an actor and feelings for their work. That said, I can't really say I think Brie Larson is anything to write home about acting-wise, and I thought her portrayal of Captain Marvel is just ok. I didn't love this movie or hate it. It's a "meh" for me, although I appreciate some of the backstory it brought into the MCU. For me this is one of my least-favorite MCU movies, but it was still done pretty well.

Ditto on what Sabrina said earlier, I always disagreed how Brie was treated, there can be a separation of the movie and the actors personal beliefs, but glad you pointed all that out, such a good conversation within the 3 of you. Quarantine has completely warped my perspective on time... I remember starting this series feeling like Endgame was sooo far alway and now were only a week out! Simultaneously feels like the Iron Man video just came out / that was a whole other life ago.
