i have been summoned by name, and i shall appear π€£ this is gonna be a lengthy comment, but i promise its necessary to accurately understand what exactly went down here. bear with me. i get really excited talking about ofa and afo because the entire dynamic is super interesting to me. SO, the time spent in the vestiges begins with AFO explaining why he, shigaraki, and deku are even seeing nana shimura in the first place. he calls it "transference". he then gives the example that sometimes with organ transfers, people have reported picking up out of character habits or characteristics they didn't have before- which is absolutely true, there are indeed reports of that happening sometimes. AFO then explains that sometimes, he has dreams where the original owners of quirks he's stolen harass him in the dreams. he says that he doesn't dream of the original quirk owners anymore after he gives the quirk away. dr. garaki helped AFO understand why that happens. if cells of the body and organs can hold memories and consciousness, then quirks do as well- ie, shirakumo/ kurogiri, and the nomus. i really emphasized this when i made my comment about kurogiri technically being a nomu bc dr. garaki had just explained that when a nomu with multiple quirks is created, they sometimes display characteristics or personality traits of the original person they were before death. which ties into the quirk factors holding memories and consciousness. AFO thinks that because of the nature of his quirk, he must also in turn endure the "harassment" of the original owners of the quirks he's stolen. that's REALLY important to bear in mind moving forward. so because AFO can "meddle" with original quirk holder's consciousnesses, so can his little brother. when OFA came to be (by mixing the stockpiling power quirk AFO gave to him, & the quirk the little brother already had to pass on quirks), something happened in the quirk factor of OFA that enabled OFA to be able to move previous wielders' consciousnesses along with the quirk itself- which are the "vestiges". NOW, as a reminder, OFA can not be taken by force, it has to be willingly passed on by the current wielder. AFO is under the impression that the hatred he nurtured inside shigaraki, paired with AFO's own quirks, he can get around that rule. AFO then realizes that shigaraki's hatred isn't enough to steal OFA bc his little brother -the first wielder- is "stubborn like him". the little brother then asks AFO if shigaraki is the next all for one, which AFO then basically confirms and implies that he made the next AFO (shigaraki) because the little brother wouldn't submit to AFO all those years ago. the little brother then stands on BUSINESS and confirms OFA can not be stolen, and that he himself and the vestiges CHOOSE to reside inside deku, because they all know deku's heart. i'm so sorry that was so long, but i do really think it was necessary bc that whole sequence was crucial to the story. ππ love you guys!
