To answer your question about why Muzan has the Upper Moons do his work despite him being so powerful, there are a few reasons. Muzan is extremely cautious. He avoids putting himself in direct danger, preferring to stay in the shadows. He has survived for centuries partly because he remains hidden. None of the Hashiras have actually seen him (they were shocked to learn that Tanjiro did). He regularly changes his identity, camouflages himself among humans and does not want to draw attention to himself. If the Hashiras or the Demon Slayer Corps discovered his whereabouts or even learned the extent of his strength or his powers, this would be absolutely huge for them. They could attempt a direct attack with basically all the Hashiras and all the members of the Corps at the same time, knowing what to expect. He also doesn't want to get his hands dirty, especially with what he considers dirty work. He uses the Moons as pawns. They test his opponents' strength, weaken the Hashiras and help him accomplish his goals (such as finding the Blue Spider Lily).
