first time viewer i cant believe hxh got me crying over the ant king 😭

riddle

ah.. this made me tear up

Your last question got to me and Meruem's words also squeeze at my heart. My grandma has Alzheimer's. Every so often she repeats the same phrases and words over and over again. She looks at my son and tells me "look at him,wow he's so big" and I tell her "yeah, he grows a little more every day 🥹" there's a pause and she tells me again "just look at him, wow he's so big ." And she does that every time she glances at him. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. I genuinely think I'm one of those people that would die for their family. I definitely think it's possible to feel that kind of unconditional love for a romantic partner as well. It's just a little harder to find.

Kenken

It wasn't "just one" human being that entered the kings life. It was "THE ONE" human being. She really was the one for him. 😭😭😭💔💔

Kenken

Thank you! I just really want to convey how much i appreciate the writing of Meruem and Komugi's love story 🥰

Are you there? If you only knew how much these phrases carry feelings, as a food and nutrition supervisor, I worked in a cancer center that specialized only in late stages, meaning that the patient had only a few days left to live, and I was assigned to the last meal, because the possibility of his death was very high, so I was checking what they wanted for their lunch and dinner from the food they craved, many of my patients that I lost, I saw wonders in the last moments of their lives, there were those who died while they were with their families, and there were those who died alone, and also those who died while playing chess like (king and komugi) 😅 and there were those who listened to the Holy Quran and there were those who listened to music and there were those who died while studying and learning even in the last moments of their lives 🥲, I remember that there was an elderly couple and the old lady used to call her husband every ten minutes to make sure that he was by her side just as you saw in this episode, this episode in particular brings back many memories that I see as beautiful and confirmed many important principles in my life and I will continue to narrate what I learned from them until my death

Meruem’s character development was so heartwarming and his last moment with Komugi was so sad. "Are you still There" 😢

Badriya

“Komugi are you still there” still tears my heart apart even after my 10 rewatch or however many its been, i love this moment and the episode title says it all, so beautifully written

ZedStar

I had this explanation saved since episode 90 ish, its such an incredible in depth writing, i really hope they read it

One more thing to point out in case you didnt catch it entirely, sorry. Palm was crying when Meruem was pleading to know Komugi's location and was about to kneel. This is because as she said herself, she is part ant now...even if she retained her human memories, her soul and body also have the ant parts that makes them fiercely loyal to Meruem, so seeing her "King" pleading and about to kneel to her broker her, her ant self couldn't bear to see the pride of their race stoop so low and disregard his autonomy just to see his beloved human.

I'll be totally honest, among all the dozens of Animes and any other series (and movies) i've watched in my 33 years of existence, this scene is in my Top 5 that made me cry....like ugly cry 😭 Let me explain, Meruem and Komugi's love story is not the usual romantic trope that every other love pairs have. Mikasa and Eren's comes close, given how tragic it was as well in the end, and both pairs didnt really show any "romantic" behavior or "flirting"....but we as viewers knew that they had special feelings for each other. But Eren's and Mikasa's didn't make me cry like this. Komugi without really knowing she's in love, was just very happy and full of appreciation towards Meruem because no one has ever treated her with care and compassion even before the invasion of the Ants. She said herself that she felt like a burden and the only thing she's good for is being a master at Gungi. So even if she was at her limit in the beginning playing Gungi without rest, she felt useful and needed by an important person as the King. Then her happiness even grew more when Meruem expressed concern for her when she got hurt by the birds. At that moment, she unknowingly fell inlove with the King, to her...Meruem is the only one who treated her with kindness and compassion. So understandably, she would 100% stay beside him and follow him even in death. That is love. Meruem on the other hand was initially a newly born inhuman creature who was declared to be a ruthless powerful being that would rule the world even before he was conceived, I dont think he was evil from the get-go, he was literally force-fed the idea that he should be ruling over all living creatures. He wasn't killing humans or fellow ants just because he was enjoying it, during that time he was just like a child still learning how to walk and talk. But overtime, and upon meeting Komugi, he developed an understanding of justice, reason, compassion, etc....he started to realize that senseless killing is not what he needed in order to create a powerful empire, he initially thought to spare humans with potential, then when he faced Netero he changed it, and offered a separate area where humans can live. We can't blame him for thinking about food, thats just their nature (much like humans eat some animals as food right). But then, he further changed that and ultimately became more humane and didnt want to rule over anyone anymore. He realized his happiness was only through Komugi, a blind human who didnt show any anger, fear nor resentment towards her own predicament or towards him. As much as I love Hisoka, Meruem's character in this arc made him my favorite a tad more than my weird sadistic clown. Their love story is both tragic and beautiful. This proves you can write a heartwarming love story without putting romance into it, and it will still convey the meaning of love perfectly. And if you noticed, there are two important character developments that happened in this arc. Gon, overwhelmed with grief and guilt went over to the dark side; while Meruem, influenced by his human emotions and love for Komugi was enlightened and became good. The real overarching question for this entire arc though is, are humans really any better than the chimera ants? which one is worse in your opinion?

Rheyia Pomar

Yea, was about to preach about this episode a bit, but this Vlad person took it all right out of my mouth. So I just wanna express how glad we are that you guys have made it this far in the journey. I was all cozied up for this episode, didn’t think my blanket would get this wet at the end of it though.

(The Real) Brandon

yes, im caught up but we are still in the succession war arc nothing changed, and i don't really care if they enjoy it or not that why they're called "average" anime fan, at the end of the day they will still watch it.

luma

Are you caught up with the manga. I loved the new batch. I'm just not sure the average anime fan would enjoy this arc.

Alpha

goodluck' its a novel but its worth it

luma

LOL on the Arcane. Gonna be on the manga soon, I can't wait

Meruem’s perspective on humanity is so insightful, he starts out seeing humans as weak and flawed, but as he interacts with them, he begins to understand their complexity. His thoughts on ecology—how we exploit the planet and mistreat other life—make you really question our destructive behaviors. He almost feels like an outsider, observing humanity from a fresh, untainted angle. The nuclear trauma ties in strong here too. In Japan, the scars of the US bombs still shape their society, and this arc shows how past atrocities affect future generations. Through Meruem, I see the state of the world today, the videos of horrors we see on social media, and also the spark of hope that’s created in response It’s not just political or ecological; it’s deeply human. The clash between Meruem's pure, almost childlike view of the world and the cruelty of human actions creates a powerful contrast. I LOVE THE KING

I still wonder how even though I watched this particular episode like 10 times already (and the next one too) and both of them never fail to make me tear up despite them not being new to me anymore. I had many things I wanted to say over this episode I had to actually take notes to not forget so here it goes: First thing is, did you notice over the previous episodes Meruem has always said "Don't make me repeat myself" or "I shall not repeat myself"... Now however he said to Palm " I shall repeat myself" and was prepared to kneel for her just so she can tell him where Komugi is. That's like the epitome of character development. Second thing about Diego, this is just my take on it, I believe that the man they showed in the fields is the real Diego who retired 30 years and left a double or fake in his stead and just retreated to a peaceful island away from all the ugliness that humans can show. I also believe that the quote that was said slightly before they showed him is his quote after he realised what truly matters to him. Our average lifespan is too long to dedicate it to just reproduction as we have physical limits, even if we want we can't. However that same lifespan is far too short to dedicate it to just learning and studying as there's way too many wonders and unknowns in this life that no one is capable of grasping all of it. So, imo, the perfect thing to do is to balance. Reproduction is a necessity to keep the human life going (altho this may bring other kinds of controversies but that's not the point), seeking knowledge is what keeps our minds working and developing, going after our desires is what keeps us going. This in itself is kinda close to the id, ego and superego (I could be wrong, im not good with philosophy) My third point is about Kokoriko, the move that komugi used against the king and he got mad over it cuz he thought she was mocking him. it was the first move that he came up with a few episodes back where he thought it's perfect but she countered it and told him that she already created it long ago however she had to find a way to defeat it as it was used on her in a competition before. So in his mind, it was a useless move until he realised she must have found a way to win it and found it as well so he countered it but she uno reversed him again. And lastly, on a small note, the king's name is Meruem which means the light that enlightens everything according to the queen, I just can't help but notice how his En is just light as well. It's as if this was all meant be to be from the start.

Kokoriko (Komugi’s technique) means the King itself. This technique is a strategy to win the game by making King piece isolate. (this was the plan of the Hunters who invaded the palace). But Komugi tells him this technique is Shiro (road to death / dead end) a while ago (ep104). The isolated King must die. But she shows him a new tactic to save king in this episode (135). It means "the King doesn't have to die". (the King survived from Netero’s bomb) But the King counterattacked her move and showed that isolated king must die after all. (by the Rose’s poison). Komugi finds a way to counterattack his counterattack, and said "I'll go with you". King is not alone anymore. She saved the isolated king. The black screen at the end has a couple meanings as well. The dying King has lost even his sight. His mother named him Meruem as "Light that illuminated all". The narrator stated that "The King’s En shined into the palace as if it’s sunshine" and "He manipulated light particles to search Palm in a house" a while ago. But the black pages in the manga suggests that he doesn't have any light now. This is a view that Komugi was seeing from the beginning. She couldn't see any light. To her, he was just Meruem. After all, those pages shows that he lost everything but gained what he truly mattered. He didn't need any soldiers, palaces, countries, power, strength, even his sight(as Komugi). He just wanted to play Gungi with Komugi. They started their last game in darkness. "1-5-1 king". "9-5-1 king". Then it was stopped. These two king pieces won’t go anywhere anymore. The light that “shines on everything" loved a blind girl. What a story!

Vlad

komugi was the happiest person when she was around the king and complete opposite before meeting the king

Gonna' tell my kids this is Romeo and Juliet! 💕

The Diego scene: The real Diego had retired over 30 years ago from Kingly duties and had given everything (wealth, status, etc) related to his position away. He put a fake Diego in his place to assume his former roles and responsibilities (you’ll notice they look similar as well) and gave him free rein to do as he pleased. The purpose was to compare him to a Meruem. Much like Meruem, the real Diego had come to the conclusion that there was more to life than being a king and all the wealth, power, and status that came with it. He found peace in life living on a simple and quiet farm. Meruem has chosen the same path as the real Diego. Meruem before his death basically threw away everything that related to being a King. He was willing to kneel for Palm, and he refused to be called by an honorific. He wanted Komugi to just call him by his first name like a regular person. If Meruem had been able to live longer, his life would have been pretty similar. Living with Komugi, playing Gungi and leading a simple life on a beautiful land somewhere in peace and quiet.

Alpha

assuming they saw the thumbnail in Crunchyroll, i mean that's the only explanation

luma

Oh no... where tf is ging??!!!! Lol The scene with the supreme leader diego (real), i think he replaced himself with a diego (fake) or a dummy lookalike to run the country while he had retired (30years) and enjoy the simple time he have at the farm. He gave up of all this power and dictator stuff, pointless stuff. Thus the poetry. Meruem, who initially sought to dominate and rule the world with his immense strength, ultimately finds true contentment not in power, but in his connection with Komugi. This realization leads him to value their time together over his original ambition. It's a poignant moment where the desire for power is replaced by a deep, simple emotional bond, much like Diego choosing a peaceful life on a farm over holding onto his powerful position. Both stories explore the theme of finding happiness in simplicity rather than in authority or dominance.

Sufiyaki Teriyaki

This is my favorite episode of HxH. And it’s one of the few pieces of media that have ever made me fully cry after witnessing it. Fun fact: “I may not be worthy, but please allow me to join you” was an old fashioned phrase Japanese women would say when accepting a marriage proposal. Another fun fact: Komugi must have realized the King wasn’t fully human when she touched his face and held his body and hand. But that didn’t matter to her and she accepted who and what he was. Another fun fact: The last time Komugi calls Meruem by his name as he’s dying, she calls him Meruem without the honorific. She honoured his request at the very end (for Komugi to call him Meruem without the honorific if he wins), despite not actually losing the match.

Alpha

I’d also flip it around: Komugi was blind and all she saw was darkness. But Meruem “the light that illuminates all”, brought light and happiness into her life.

Alpha

Personally, this is not Peak all 148 episodes is NOT PEAK. For me PEAK is in the manga, I can't explain how INSANE it is there, its like bad, crazy, and worst met in one room wondering whose going to die first. Also, I would like to order an Arcane episode 4, a large episode 5, with an extra spicy episode 6, oh' and keep the change.

luma

the story of a blind girl teaching a god how to see..
