I say binge it! i finally had time yesterday and decided to watch Kaiju no 8 for the first time so i could finally watch your reactions! (i can't watch the very first time as your reaction videos because it's too much for my brain) i was initially going to only watch the first 4 episodes and then watch one episode every week before your reactions drop, but the voices won and i ended up watching the entire show yesterday 😅😅 i had a brief break where i watched your 3 JJK videos, so yesterday was a great anime day lol! and today i was able to binge your 4 reactions while i worked, i love it when i can spend my work days with you guys!
i'm late to the party so i'll try not to ramble on too much, but i have some thoughts! i reallly love Kafka, getting a main character who is around my age is refreshing and i can relate to him more than the typical anime MC. Kikoru is a badass, i wish she was also a bit more mature but part of what makes her skills so amazing is her youth so it makes sense. Ichikawa just going with the flow when Kafka transformed was one of my favorite parts, i related to him a lot in that moment because i'm also the type of person to be like "okay this is happening and i can't stop it, what do i do next" and not panic in the moment.
i loved the balance between serious and comedic moments, before watching i didn't know anything about the show other than "Kaiju" and i thought it was going to be a bit more serious like AOT. but it surprised me and i was relating it to FMAB, it has similar comedy amongst the serious fight scenes and world building. i think this is something that is achieved in anime more easily, seeing as they can animate characters to look silly/cute, even if they are a terrifying kaiju monster, when the moment calls for it.
this anime was so great, and i knew it would be! i wish i got to it sooner, but alas now i just have another story added to my "to read" list, right next to solo leveling and JJK which i've almost finished. this always happens when an anime is so good and nowhere near caught up to the manga itself 😂😂

Coming from someone who's most impressionable character to me was Reiner, because I grew up in a cultish religious background, I was a racist asshole to many growing up, and there is absolutely no excuse to my behavior, I deserved people walking out on me in life, and I was one of the last family members to get out of it. AOT was huge to me because Reiner got a redemption story, and I'm working my ass off to heal from so much trauma I was under. Granted, its not like this bitchy anime character, but man, I did have a mean father like her. Seeing her transition, Reiner's transition, Annie's too...it gives me a path to see that I can take to get out of my own muck too. The only time I think its unnecessary is when they are just bitchy for no reason and no redemption arc from that.

Haikyuu is also part of the Shounen demographic, it's considered a slice of life manga/anime with a sports theme, most sport anime are Shounen too

I think this was well said and honestly about time we had someone display this for them, cause I'm going through Vinland Saga right now and the only thing I have to compare it to is AOT, which is half-and-half a Shounen too. There are so many types out there J&J, I'm still new to them like yall, but other than Haikyuu, yall have seen mostly just Shounen, which makes sense yall are comparing it to what you've already seen haha!

I'm just about a year into the anime trend, but ain't that the truth. At least for the good writing animes/characters, the rude ones often have some sort of dark past. I like to think back to the anime, Noragami, with Bishamon, that one is one of my favorites that gave me a heart change once I saw her backstory. I really need to watch that again, loved it more than I thought I would, but I want season 3 sooooo badddd

Hello J&J, this might be a little bit of a long comment so I apologize in advance.
I love that you are making parallels to every other anime you've watched so far LoL, but I have to say it's mostly Shounen with similar genres but different themes so it's bound to happen, maybe understanding more about anime and manga could help with creating the list for your next watch and you might be surprised by the results.
I'm not sure if anyone has explained this and also I'm not an expert but I'll try; a lot of anime is based off of manga (Japanese comics), but not all of them off course, so they tend to follow the same classification given to manga, in general they are divided by demographic (age range), genres, sub-genres and themes.
Within the demographic classification there are 5 major types:
1. Kodomomuke: Geared toward children below 12 years old, like Pokemon, Digimon and Doraemon. The genres for these are mostly adventure, action and comedy with themes like family, loyalty and friendship that teach children morals and how to become a good person in general.
2. Shounen: The most popular type of anime, it translates to Boy, so it's targeted toward teen boys (12 to 18 years old), some examples: HxH, AoT*, JJK, One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, MHA...... Way too many! It includes a mix of a wide variety of genres such as adventure, action, drama, sci-fi, fantasy and more. It mostly has a storyline revolving around the protagonist, who aims to achieve his goals through enthralling battles with themes like friendship or camaraderie development and personal growth. It also has several themes and subgenres like supernatural events, video games, sports, superpowers...etc.
3. Shoujo: It translates to young girl, so it targets the young female audience 12 to 18 years old, it explores the feminine side and mostly includes genres such as romance and drama where the lead is a young girl and the story follows her life and relationships, Shoujo also explores LGBTQ+ stories and themes like magical powers, mythology and fantasy, some examples: Fruits Basket, Sailor Moon, Ouran High School Host Club, Violet Evergarden, Banana fish, Cardcaptor Sakura..... Also a lot of these!
4. Seinen: It means youth and it's geared towards adult men, so 18+, which means it has mature and adult explicit content but it follows similar genres to shounen with more psychological, gore, violence, abuse, erotic, horror.... themes, pretty much no story resctiction or censorship, examples: Vinland Saga, Berserk, Pshyco-Pass, Monster, GANTZ ....... So many too! I'm sure the patreons can helps with more examples.
5. Josei: Refers to "Woman or Female", geared towards 18+ women and shows the realistic lives of women, including their relationships, challenges and more, it delves deeply into complex feelings, difficult situations and growth. Like Shoujo it also explores LGBTQ+ genres and it's subgenres in a more realistic and grounded way. Examples: Kuragehime, Paradise kiss, Hachimitsu to kuroba..... Etc.
*Some people consider AoT as Seinen because of the more adult content, but is was published in an Shounen magazine so.... Dunno I'll leave it to you to decide.
There are a lot of genres most of them are pretty well known like action, adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, drama, romance, comedy, horror, thriller.... Etc. The same goes for and themes but there are some that are more used in manga and anime than other meduims, like:
* Mecha: Giant robots or human controlled machine robots.
* Isekai: A character dies and reincarnates into a fantasy or magical world.
* Slice of life: following the characters daily lives and the drama around them for a specific amount of time.
* Mahou Shoujo: Female protagonist that have magical powers
* Yaoi/BL: romance between men
* Yuri/GL: romance between women
* Idols: Following the life centered around female and male idols
Of course there are way more but this comment is already so long, that being said I am a woman but I thoroughly enjoy anime that's geared toward men too, like action, sci-fi, supernatural, fantasy and thriller genres, stuff like that I love them!
I know there are a lot of patreons who would love to see you react to Seinen, Josei and even Shoujo, I've seen a lot of those recommendations on the comments for all of the anime you've watched, perhaps the moderators could help you look for them just so you avoid any kind of spoilers!
Personally I'm happy with whatever you choose to watch and I'll continue to support your content, it's always very fun and helps me unwind every day! Again sorry for the longest comment ever
Love from.... you know where ❤️

There are a lot of male tsundere in Shoujo manga and anime

All I know is tsundere is a very popular trope in anime and manga. I'm not sure where it originated from but there are definitely male versions out there too. I think it's just a popular character arc amongst many authors

It's just a common trope in anime, sometimes main characters are A-holes at first then the viewer learns more about them and can sympathize with them. Idk I agree not all people with horrible trauma and backstories end up being bullies but in anime it's just something they do

To Brandon’s point , I understand the tendency to equate behaviour with a sad backstory. The problem with that is that bullying, hatred, prejudice and bigotry are learned behaviours. Projecting that onto others doesn’t change your past, heal your wounds or improve your present/future. My backstory would give most people nightmares and I could be the meanest, biggest, bitter bitch on the planet but for what purpose. Hurting others wouldn’t change my past. People blame social media for a lot of things. The abusive/absentee parents in the Anime’s we have watched together so far hits hard with me.
However, why perpetuate the bullying, name calling etc when developing strong female characters. If you’re going to be a “Karen”, that’s a choice. (Apologies to anyone named Karen). Yes, show that life is hard but you can overcome adversity, rise above self doubt, feelings of worthlessness, a difficult start in life, and be a positive role model to those watching. These Mangas and Anime’s have such an influence on people that it’s sad to see strong, confident, talented, ambitious characters show some of the stereotypical least attractive characteristics that women are plagued by.
Sorry for going on a rant. 🙄😬🙃😕

Loll Cheryl you right. It’s about time I do that. 2J, it’s Kia (kee-ah). Like IKEA but without the I.
Also, this episodee! It’s getting so good. I was not expecting another person who could transform. And on another note, I’m happy Kikoru knows and is keeping Kafka’s secret. I can’t wait to see the dynamic between Kikoru, Ichikawa, and Kafka as the only 3 who knows this big thing. Anyways this was such a good episode. Kafka is an amazing character. I love that his instinct is to help because he knows he can despite the risk of being found out and killed. A hero.
I can’t wait to see what happens next. That ending was shocking.

This might answer Cheryl question but it's just my opinion, as we see in this episode how Kikuro backstory wasn't the best childhood so that can explain why she's the way she is as an adult, I'm not sure if this is done just for female characters but usually in anime the rude bitchy characters usually have the sad backstories

Kikoru's father looks like a whole daruma doll (the Thanos shape of his head and his facial hair have made me think of them since the first time I saw his character) Also I love the parallel of her apologizing to her father for not being "perfect" to Kafka popping up and immediately saying thanks to her hard work everyone was able to evacuate safely. It was nice to see her get genuine validation verses the faux ass kissing she probably gets as someone with money and prominence.
