I both love and hate this season, not including the art style change 🙃. It’s great to see what the Karasuno boys achieve, how far they’ve come, and how they continue to grow. But I tend to avoid watching season 4 mainly because it’s a painful reminder of my school days and my own waisted time. Specifically this episode, the part where Hinata has his mini breakdown/reboot in the storage closet. I understand his feelings 100% and it makes me frustrated with him.
I played volleyball in 6th grade, the only year I played. I remember actually really looking forward to playing and being excited to play a sport I wanted to. But that hope and glee was quickly diminished. Since I was a chubby kid the coaches tended to not focus on me or the other plus size girls. (Though I identify as a man now.) Their attention was always focused on the girls who’s done great during the basketball season. Since it was a small school, most girls who did sports played both. I never had the enthusiasm for basketball but rather I loved volleyball bc my aunt use to play and was a volleyball fan. Since the coaches ignored me, she was the one who taught me the basics: how to tip, bump, and simple serves since I was too short to really spike. I remember practicing nearly every night in the back yard until the sun was down and I was being bitten by mosquitoes. But in the end I only got to play one away practice game. Nobody from my family showed up. Even though we won and I celebrated with my friends on the bus ride back, it felt empty. Like I did all that work for nothing because no one cared. So I quit.
After I got older and watched haikyuu, I learned I actually would’ve made a decent libero. The one thing I was good at, was diving after the ball. I went through a few knee pads even though I never really got to play. But last week my little brothers were over and I pulled out the volleyball. Apparently I can still kinda chase the ball, may have needed an ibuprofen the next day but it was the first time in a long while that I had that much fun. My main regret is not trying out for the high school team, because I wish I could’ve felt like that on the court one more time under those buzzing fluorescent lights.

The coach definitely is not trying to get back at Hinata/Karusuno. I mean Tsukishima was invited and he is undoubtedly the MVP of the Finals. Just a thought. How can be petty if he invited the MVP of his opponent in the finals?

It always cracks me up whenever you guys take notes on a little notebook because I am the same way but with western tv shows instead of anime 😂
I just wanted to point out that it will be a damn struggle to watch Hinata go through all of this. Shoyo is the sunshine boy of this anime and it hurts to watch him be a little lost :( BUT it is definitely necessary. He has improved immensely from what he was in S1 but he still needs to work on a lot of things. It's also, in a way, a rude awakening of what it's like WITHOUT Kageyama. I have so many feelings that I want to say but I don't want to spoil anything for you guys
Always enjoy listening to your insights! I will be here once again for next week! See ya'lls!!

Sassy and Chaotic Suga made his appearance in these last two episodes. Sassy Suga when he told Kageyama to mention him in future interviews back in episode 1. Chaotic Suga when he complitmented Hinata on his sneaking into the First Year Rookie Camp in episode 2. By the way did you noticed out of everyone on the team including Ukai and Takeda only Tanaka, Noya and Suga were the only ones to compliement Hinata on his daring little adventure.

Rather than cruelty, Kageyama knows exactly how to push Hinata’s buttons. I do think Kageyama relishes in the “victory,” but his line and smirk were not intentionally cruel.

I just want to say, pay close attention to coach and see if you can deduce his true intentions :) and I will circle back to this when said and done

I meant to drop this during the shiratorizawa game arc but I think I forgot 🙈 this is just a quick TikTok compilation of The Art of Yuji Nishida, who many people call the real life Ushijima because they are both powerful and strong lefties who play the position of Opposite (Jordan I think you actually clocked this when you said you watched a little of the olympics). I always love to take any opportunity to highlight that Haikyu is not so unrealistic compared to real life 😅 also want to point out that Nishida is 6’1. For comparison, Matt Anderson is an Opposite who plays for the US and he is 6’10 lol. The boys on the Japanese team sure know how to fly

Many people critique Kageyama's conversation with Hianata but I find them very insightful and in character. After Kagayama was chosen for the national youth group and Hinata wasn't, he said "I'm going on ahead". Some might see this as cruel and it is to an extent, but I think Hinata would have found it even more cruel if Kageyama tried to comfort him. Kageyama respects him enough to feel pride in being ahead. If he felt bad for Hinata, it would undermine his competitive nature. You would rather your opponent cheer their victory than pity your loss is what I mean. Kageyama respects Hinata and his drive, so his stating that he is going ahead, is him celebrating and reminding Hinata that he needs to keep up. They made a promise to always compete with each other after all, and they can't do that if one gets left behind. I just love the way Furudata doesn't shy away from their personalities and doesn't cushion their blows. He truly understands the characters he's made and their motivations.
Can't wait till next week, it's getting harder and harder to wait for yall's haikyuu updates lol

Hii, here from the BTS patreon because I couldn't resist the call of an Haikyuu rewatch and you're finally starting season 4, I was dying for you to watch it! This is probably one of my favorite arc in the anime, the reason being that I loved to see Hinata character evolve and beginning to grow, this is like that first step in achieving a goal (any goal really, and the first step is actually the hardest one in my opinion), but I really see him starting to think more and really mature in a sense here. The other reason I love this arc is the new character you will see later on (I won't say more than that) that is one of my favorite in the serie. Loving your reactions so far, can't wait for the next episodes!!! (sorry if there is any mistake or if what I wrote doesn't make any sense :'), I am from Italy)

I think you guys are a bit biased when it comes to Hinata 😂 Unfortunately at this point in time, Hinata doesn't really have any technical skills involving serving, receiving, setting (like for one touches) etc. All he has is raw agility and speed. Most of that was highlighted in previous seasons thanks to Kageyama's incredible technique and skill. I think Hinata would've had a much harder time in previous seasons just getting around blocks if he did not have Kageyama. If you think about it, he relies way too much on Kageyama's skill. It sucks, but it's completely understandable why Shiratorizawa's Coach would say something like that to Hinata (that he doesn't see any value in him without Kageyama setting for him). With that being said, I think this experience is extremely important for Hinata's growth and development~ He won't always have a genius setter to elevate his game, he'll have to learn new skills if he wants to compete with the best!

some of my fav reactors ever! they pay such attention and i love it even down to the wording used. these are some of my favorite episodes actually , nothing can show someones drive like going out of your way in such a crucial time to observe everything and anything you can about your sport. Changing your mind set at the drop of a hat to milk everything you can from your current situation is a skill I myself have yet to learn. Hinata is 10/10 MC and im so excited for you to see Karasuno grow ! thanks you for another reaction 💜

Hey there J&J! Watching from Romania here. This is my first comment so sorry in advance if my english isn't good. :))
I think our spunky Hinata really needs this "rough" treatment he's getting. As Takeda said, he must learn from the beginning. He lacks at receiving, serving and blocking. But we must remember that Hinata did not have the opportunity to be trained by a coach until high school, or by a parent who was a volleyball player and taught him the basics (like in Ushiwaka case for example). Everything was self taught while watching the "old ladies" and the girls team in junior high. Hinata didn't begin at the bottom of the ladder. He was already at the middle of it due to his pure athleticism, speed, stamina and his crazy jump. But with no foundation. He started as a capitan in junior high and as a regular in high school. The latter being mostly because of the quick attack he and Kageyama managed to pull.
Having a strong mindset doesn't make you a good player. But boy, just wait until he learns all of those things. That's when the true monster will awaken.
Also, being the ball boy will make him see things, not from the perspective of a spiker on the court, but from the perspective of someone on the sidelines who has no choice but to observe and absorb everything and everything. Even Daichi started as a ball boy and that's why he's good at recevies and reading the game.
It's a humbling experience, for sure, but a beneficial one.
Fun fact: In the manga, after Goshiki sees Hinata putting his head in between the mats, there is a panel where he goes and puts his head in it as well trying to see why Hinata did it lmao!

Finally, the episodes that embarrassed me the most of all the ones I've seen in other shows lmaoo he just shows up uninvited
I always found Shiratorizawa's coach interesting. He is clearly always grumpy and quite entrenched in what he believes is the power of a team (height and strength, like Wakatoshi or some other players who are there) but despite that, he is always looking at Hinata. More than having a grudge for beating Shiratorizawa, I think it projects onto Hinata and his past frustrations with not being powerful enough like he thought he should be with height and brute strength (it's in last season's flashback i think). More certainly, I think he wants to prove that what he believes is right. Anyway, I watched this show a while ago and I think this was the thought I had...
Great reaction as always guys. Love your analysis! This is the first time I am a Patreon member and I wanted to tell you that your videos here and on youtube always accompany me in my afternoons and evenings <3 also sorry for my english with some help from google translation hahah

I have so much I want to say but I'm at work so I'm gonna have to come back later lol 😆 I love this arc in Haikyu so much.
ok i'm back haha
so i do not think the coach of shiratorizawa (Washijo) has a grudge agains karasuno or Hinata, otherwise he wouldn't have invited Tsukki to the camp either. he was looking for tall and strong/powerful players, not necessarily "the best" players, seeing as he also invited the "2 meter tall" guy who has no skills to speak of. i believe Washijo just has his own trauma from being held back by his height, and truly underestimates Hinatas potential. Hinata doesn't have a lot of basic skills at this point still, of course he's getting better but he needs to start at the bottom and work up, as Takeda said.
speaking of the other first years, i dont know if you recognized most of them being from the teams that karasuno has played so far. karasuno didn't get to play the big boned setter from date tech, but you've seen him play before, the 2 meter tall guy, boys from aoba johsai, and of course the many boys from shiratorizawa. also the younger coach is the coach from Johzenji which was the orange colored team that played to 'have the most fun'
lastly i think you'll pick up on this through the dub, and also later episodes, but Tendo isn't being mean to Hinata, he's genuinely confused / interested in what the heck is going on. no one is actually being mean to Hinata, he was not invited to this training camp and the stipulation for him staying is that he needs to be a ball boy which comes with responsibilities. this is another reason i don't think Washoji is purposefully treating him badly, if he wanted Hinata out of there he would have sent him home, but he is kind enough / interested enough to let Hinata stay and watch and learn that way. if Hinata wants to carve his own path, he needs to be mentally strong as well and this is a test for him in that regard, as i usually say "if you're gunna be dumb you gotta be tough."
